TRADE WATCH LIST 2022
TOP 40
aS OF March 21, 2022 | 5:00pm ET
The 2021-22 NHL Trade Deadline isn’t until March 21, 2022 (at 3pm ET), but that doesn’t mean teams aren’t already exploring the market and discussions potential deals.
As we do every season, TFP has outlined some of the top names rumoured to be available according to various media reports and our own league-wide sources. Last season, 19 players listed came off the board. In 2020, 24 players listed were traded, and 16 were moved in 2019.
This page will be updated frequently and TFP's panel of experts will outline each player's value. Some players may climb or fall off the list, while others may be added.
NOTE: Teams linked to players are based off various media reports and internal sources.
1. Jakob Chychrun, LD - Arizona Coyotes
TFP’s David Pagnotta first reported on NHL Network at the start of the season that teams had inquired about Chychrun’s availability in the off-season. That interest has carried into the season and the Coyotes are listening. It will cost a significant package to get him out of Arizona (3-4 assets), but the effort’s there and it seems like the Coyotes could be persuaded if the right deal presented itself — whether that happens during the season or in the summer is the question. Chychrun has three-years left on his contract after this season.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Los Angeles, Florida, Carolina, Boston, Anaheim, St. Louis, Toronto, Columbus
2. Claude Giroux, C/RW - Philadelphia Flyers
Traded to Florida (Mar. 19)
Giroux owns a full no-movement clause and will dictate where he ends up, if he is traded. As TFP's David Pagnotta first reported on NHL Network in early-January, Giroux met with his agent, Pat Brisson, over All-Star Weekend to discuss his future and his options. Brisson can speak with other teams to gage the market. Giroux holds all the cards and if he wants a shot at a Stanley Cup, a move closer to deadline day seems likely.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Colorado, Boston, Florida, St. Louis, Carolina
3. Hampus Lindholm, LD - Anaheim Ducks
Traded to Boston (Mar. 19)
Lindholm is in the final year of his contract and can become a UFA this summer. As TFP’s Dennis Bernstein reported on Feb. 16, the belief is Lindholm is leaning towards testing the free agent waters in July, and if new Ducks GM Pat Verbeek can’t convince him to sign an extension before the deadline, the Ducks will look to trade him and retain assets in return.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Tampa Bay, NY Rangers, Boston, Florida, Toronto, Carolina, Edmonton
4. Mark Giordano, LD - Seattle Kraken
Traded to Toronto (Mar. 20)
The Kraken have experienced a rough first season in the NHL, but the team is focused on the long-term. Whether or not that includes captain Giordano is up in the air. Giordano’s in the final year of his contract and owns a 19-team trade list. His agent has had talks with Kraken GM Ron Francis about his future. For contenders looking to stabilize their backend, Giordano will be appealing — but the price likely starts with a first-round pick.
Teams reportedly Linked:
NY Rangers, Florida, Toronto, Calgary, St. Louis, Carolina, Boston
5. Rickard Rakell, RW/LW - Anaheim Ducks
Traded to Pittsburgh (Mar. 21)
The Ducks are in the thick of things in the Western Conference playoff race and have been reluctant to consider moving any of their pending UFAs — especially without a new GM. But now that Pat Verbeek is at the helm, the Ducks are expected to take calls on Rakell, who switched agents this season. Teams expressed interest in Rakell last season and in the summer, and are no doubt calling again.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Toronto, Pittsburgh, Boston, Tampa Bay, NY Rangers, St. Louis, Minnesota
6. Max Domi, C/LW - Columbus Blue Jackets
Traded to Carolina (Mar. 21)
Domi is having a good bounce-back season in Columbus. With limited top-six forwards available, Domi is generating interest. He is in the final year of his contract, there haven’t been any recent contract talks, and will become an unrestricted free agent in July.
Teams reportedly Linked:
NY Rangers, Washington, Toronto, Colorado, Boston, Carolina
7. John Klingberg, RD - Dallas Stars
TFP's David Pagnotta broke the news on NHL Now on NHL Network on Jan. 7 that Klingberg has asked for a trade if the Stars weren’t going to sign him to an extension. Contract talks hit a barrier and the 29-year-old blueliner is not expected to sign a deal with the Stars any time soon — unless the now-public trade request pushes things forward. The Stars do not have to accommodate his ask and could hold on to Klingberg for their own playoff aspirations. Alternatively, contending teams may pay a premium for him ahead of the trade deadline. It is wait-and-see mode in Dallas.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Carolina, Florida, Calgary, NY Rangers, Tampa Bay, Toronto
8. Calvin de Haan, LD/RD - Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks are expected to move de Haan by the deadline. The two sides had very preliminary contract talks earlier in the season, but de Haan is expected to head into July looking for a new contract somewhere else. Chicago will likely retain a chunk of his cap hit in order to help a trade go through.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Edmonton, Boston, Nashville, Colorado, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington, Toronto, Vegas
9. Jeff Petry, RD - Montreal Canadiens
Petry hasn’t formally asked for a trade, per Habs GM Kent Hughes, but the 34-year-old defenceman would welcome a change of scenery after a tumultuous season led by COVID restrictions in Quebec that resulted in his family returning to their home in the U.S. Hughes said he is willing to move Petry, if the right deal presents itself. Petry has three more years left on his contract and comes with a $6.25M salary cap hit. He also owns a 15-team no-trade list.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Dallas, Philadelphia
10. Jake DeBrusk, LW - Boston Bruins
If you recall, DeBrusk was on last season’s Trade Watch List, as the club dangled him around the league. Since then, his frustrations over his usage have mounted and his desire for a change of scenery was escalated in late-November, later becoming public — and that feeling hasn’t changed. The Bruins are trying to trade him and are looking for a talent-for-talent swap.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Arizona, Edmonton, Seattle, San Jose, Anaheim
11. Tyler Bertuzzi, LW/RW - Detroit Red Wings
As TFP's David Pagnotta first reported on NHL Network in early-March, the Detroit Red Wings are taking calls on Bertuzzi, who has one more year left on his contract. There is no sense of urgency to move him, but there is interest in Bertuzzi and the Wings are open to the possibility.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Pittsburgh, Toronto, NY Islanders, Los Angeles
12. Justin Braun, RD - Philadelphia Flyers
Traded to NY Rangers (Mar. 21)
As the Flyers debate internally when they should start selling off some of their assets, Braun will be player available once they decide to explore the trade market. He is a serviceable bottom-pair defenceman with plenty of experience and that is something contending teams will look at as the trade deadline approaches.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Boston, Toronto, Nashville, Edmonton, NY Rangers, Minnesota
13. Owen Tippett, RW - Florida Panthers
Traded to Philadelphia (Mar. 19)
The Panthers are trying to get even better and are dangling Tippett as trade bait. The 23-year-old is just scratching the surface of his potential and with a loaded forward corps in Florida, he could start to thrive with more ice time on a new team.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Dallas, Philadelphia, Montreal, Anaheim, Arizona
14. Andrew Copp, LW - Winnipeg Jets
Traded to NY Rangers (Mar. 21)
The Jets aren’t gaining much ground in the playoff race and that could result in GM Kevin Cheveldayoff listening to offers for some of his players. One Jet that will receive plenty of interest in Copp, who is in the final year of his contract. At the time of this update, there haven’t been any contract talks on an extension. For teams looking to bolster their middle-six forward corps, Copp is an ideal addition for contenders.
Teams reportedly Linked:
NY Rangers, Boston, Carolina, Toronto, Washington, Edmonton, Colorado, Los Angeles
15. Conor Garland, RW/LW - Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks are taking calls on multiple players and while they’re reluctant to move most of them, Garland seems to be someone the new management regime in Vancouver are more willing to part with. This may evolve into an off-season move, if it happens, but something to certainly watch as the deadline approaches.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Pittsburgh, Toronto, New Jersey, Boston, Los Angeles, Columbus
16. Cal Clutterbuck, RW - New York Islanders
The Islanders are still holding on to hope that they can make a playoff push this season, but if they cannot make up more ground by the deadline, Clutterbuck is someone the Isles will consider moving. He is in the final year of a five-year, $17.5 million contract and does not own any no-trade protection.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Minnesota, Colorado, Boston
17. Phil Kessel, RW - Arizona Coyotes
It is no secret the Coyotes would like to trade Kessel this season, just as much as it is well known he would like a move to a Stanley Cup contender. The Coyotes will likely need to retain as much as half of Kessel’s cap hit (he’s only owed $1 million in salary this season after his $5M bonus was paid out July 1), and such a move is more likely to occur closer to the deadline.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Boston, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, NY Rangers
18. Artturi Lehkonen, LW/RW - Montreal Canadiens
Traded to Colorado (Mar. 21)
There appears to be several teams highly interested in exploring a trade for Lehkonen, who can become a restricted free agent in July. He would command a decent price that starts with a first-round pick. The Habs are willing to listen on almost anyone, but that does not mean they will move everyone.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Washington, NY Rangers, Minnesota, Colorado, Los Angeles
19. Dominik Kubalik, LW/RW - Chicago Blackhawks
As the Blackhawks enter their rebuild phase, Kubalik is a player they are actively taking calls on. He’s an RFA this summer and could use a change of scenery — something the Blackhawks are willing to do, for the right deal.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Edmonton, Buffalo, Anaheim
20. Dylan Strome, LW/C - Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks have dangled Strome since last season and this could finally be the year they pull the trigger; sources suggest he even believed he was going to be dealt in the off-season. He can become a restricted free agent in July, but comes with a $3 million cap hit. We’ll see if the Hawks find him a new home.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Ottawa, Columbus, Anaheim, Boston, Seattle
21. Marc-Andre Fleury, G - Chicago Blackhawks
Traded to Minnesota (Mar. 21)
It’s going to be up to Fleury, at the end of the day, but with Chicago open for business, moving Flower to a Cup contender could be something we see closer to the trade deadline.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Washington, Colorado, Toronto, Minnesota, Pittsburgh
22. Tyler Motte, LW/RW - Vancouver Canucks
Traded to NY Rangers (Mar. 21)
Motte is scheduled to become a UFA this summer. The Canucks are trying to see if they can get him locked up to an extension, but if they can’t agree to terms, they’ll explore moving him ahead of the trade deadline and teams will have interest in his services and low cap hit.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Colorado, Tampa Bay, Washington, NY Rangers, Toronto
23. Nick Paul, C/LW - Ottawa Senators
Traded to Tampa Bay (Mar. 20)
Contract talks, as of Mar. 17, have not progressed between the Senators and Paul, who can become a UFA this summer. If that continues, the expectation is Paul will be traded by the deadline, and teams in need of a bottom-six upgrade are interested.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Tampa Bay, Boston, Edmonton, Los Angeles
24. Brock Boeser, RW - Vancouver Canucks
There are teams that are very interested in Boeser, who can become a restricted free agent this summer. The Canucks, however, really like him, too. There has been an open dialogue between the team and Boeser’s reps, as TFP’s David Pagnotta has continuously reported, and unless a team completely knocks Vancouver’s socks off, the team is holding on to him. But they aren’t ignoring calls — if a team is willing to pay a premium, they’ll listen.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
New Jersey, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh
25. Travis Konecny, RW/LW - Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers came close to trading Konecny in the off-season, but that move fell through. Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher is open to a variety of options and moving Konecny as part of a large hockey trade could be in the cards ahead of the deadline as management weighs all of its options.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Los Angeles, Toronto, New Jersey
26. J.T. Miller, LW - Vancouver Canucks
The vultures were circling Vancouver when they were struggling mightily, and many of them set their talons on Miller, who has one-year left on his contract after this season. Since their coach and GM change, the Canucks have been playing better, but that has not stopped teams from poking around to see if they can pry Miller from them. Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin will listen, but there are no guarantees he will trade Miller this season.
Teams reportedly Linked:
NY Rangers, Colorado, Carolina, Toronto
27. P.K. Subban, RD - New Jersey Devils
Subban made his debut on the TFP Trade Watch List on Day 1 of the list being published. With Subban on an expiring contract, it seemed likely the team would explore moving him by the deadline. Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald publicly admitted in early-March that Subban won’t be re-signed and he will take trade calls. However, at a $9 million salary cap hit, even if the Devils retained half his deal, moving him might be a challenge if New Jersey’s price tag is too high. If a move happens, it’ll be closer to deadline day.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
28. Brett Kulak, LD - Montreal Canadiens
Traded to Edmonton (Mar. 21)
Kulak, who can become a UFA in July 2022, provides contending teams with an option come playoff time, should any of their regular six defencemen are knocked out of action due to injury. His 23 playoff games in the past two seasons will be something teams look at closer to the deadline.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Los Angeles, Calgary, Dallas, Edmonton, St. Louis
29. Robert Hagg, LD - Buffalo Sabres
Traded to Florida (Mar. 20)
For teams interested in a depth defenceman ahead of the trade deadline, Hagg could be a prime candidate. The Sabres are listening on all of their pending UFAs and acquiring a decent draft pick for Hagg could be in the cards. He comes with a low cap hit and could be a solid 6-7-8 blueliner for a contender.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Edmonton, Nashville, Dallas
30. Joonas Korpisalo, G - Columbus Blue Jackets
Korpisalo is in the final year of his contract and can become a UFA next summer. A trade is not imminent, at this time of this update, but a move closer to the trade deadline could be something in the cards for the Blue Jackets, as Korpisalo will likely test the waters in July.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Vegas, Washington, Toronto
31. Gabe Vilardi, RW/C - Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings are fishing for a top left-shot defenceman or a top-six scoring winger and teams have plenty of interest in some of their top prospects, including Vilardi, who is playing very well in the AHL this season. The 2017 11th overall pick isn’t being actively shopped, but the Kings aren’t saying he’s unavailable, either… but LA won’t move him unless it’s part of a deal for a significant upgrade.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Arizona, Philadelphia, Chicago
32. Colin Miller, RD - Buffalo Sabres
Miller is a UFA in July and the Sabres are actively looking to move him, among some of their other defencemen. Sabres GM Kevyn Adams told TFP’s David Pagnotta & Dennis Bernstein on Mar. 5 on The Hot Stove that he’s willing to retain money on any deal if the right offer presented itself. That could apply here if Miller’s traded by the deadline.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Boston, St. Louis, Carolina
33. Alexander Georgiev, G - New York Rangers
Georgiev was looking for a change of scenery when the season started and the Rangers tried to accommodate him. For now, with how well the team has been playing, the Rangers may stand pat this season and hold on to Georgiev, who can become an RFA in July.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Vegas, Edmonton
34. Nick Leddy, LD - Detroit Red Wings
Traded to St. Louis (Mar. 21)
Leddy can become a UFA this summer and so far he hasn’t had any talks with the Red Wings about a new contract. Detroit is willing to retain some salary and could take on part of Leddy’s $5.5 million cap hit, which could make trading him to a contender easier on the acquiring team’s budget.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Boston, St. Louis, Minnesota, NY Rangers
35. Nic Deslauriers, LW/RW - Anaheim Ducks
Traded to Minnesota (Mar. 19)
As the Blackhawks enter their rebuild phase, Kubalik is a player they are actively taking calls on. He’s an RFA this summer and could use a change of scenery — something the Blackhawks are willing to do, for the right deal.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Washington, Toronto, Edmonton, Carolina, Minnesota, NY Rangers, Vegas
36. Semyon Varlamov, G - New York Islanders
The Islanders are taking calls on Varlamov, who has a 16-team no-trade list and has one more year left on his current contract. Teams may need the Islanders, or a third team, to retain a portion of his contract, but that will result in a higher overall price.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Vegas, Colorado, Washington, Edmonton
37. Travis Dermott, LD - Toronto Maple Leafs
Traded to Vancouver (Mar. 20)
The cap-strapped Maple Leafs will eventually need to shed salary and if they go the trade route, Dermott could be the odd man out. He’s no stranger to the rumour mill, and teams interested in a third-pair blueliner with an affordable cap hit may come calling.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Anaheim, Buffalo, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Columbus, Dallas
38. Chris Tierney, C - Ottawa Senators
For teams looking to bolster their centre position in their bottom-six, Tierney could fill that void. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent this July and is generating interest around the league. The Senators are open for business and could move him prior to the deadline.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
39. Mikko Koskinen, G - Edmonton Oilers
If the Oilers want to make any significant add this season, they will have to move out salary to do so, and one area the club has been trying to improve is its goaltending — even though GM Ken Holland said publicly on Jan. 11 the net belongs to Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen. Well, Koskinen has a $4.5 million salary cap hit. He is in the final year of his contract and if Holland wants to bolster his roster in a meaningful way, especially between the pipes, moving Koskinen and his cap hit is essential. The Oilers might have to sweeten the pot to make a deal happen, but it is an option they have been exploring, and there a few bottom-feeder teams willing to eat a contract for a draft pick and/or prospect.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
40. Vitali Kravtsov, RW - New York Rangers
Kravtsov is spending the rest of this season with Chelyabinsk of the KHL, so any team acquiring him is looking at next season and beyond. There remains interest in the player, but the Rangers are trying to package him in deals for roster upgrades. If a deal isn’t made in-season, the Rangers will continue to explore their options in the summer and around the NHL Draft.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Vancouver, Montreal
PLAYERS TRADED
4. Ben Chiarot, LD - Montreal Canadiens
Traded to Florida (Mar. 16)
Chiarot will be a highly-coveted player leading up to the trade deadline. He’s in the final year of his contract and teams looking to bolster their blueline will be calling, especially after his solid performance during Montreal’s run to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final. The asking price is still believed to begin with a first-round pick; we’ll see who pays up.
Teams reportedly Linked:
St. Louis, Calgary, Toronto, Los Angeles, Florida, NY Rangers, Boston, Carolina, Minnesota
13. Josh Manson, RD - Anaheim Ducks
Traded to Colorado (Mar 14)
Manson is in the final year of his contract and can become a UFA this summer. He has a 12-team no-trade list and comes with a $4.1 million salary cap hit. If the Ducks cannot get him signed to an extension by the trade deadline, there seems to be a decent chance the Ducks will look to move him for a package of assets. Manson wants to stay in Anaheim, however, so we’ll see where this goes.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Toronto, NY Rangers, St. Louis, Florida, Carolina, Minnesota
14. Travis Boyd, C - Arizona Coyotes
Signed extension with Arizona (Mar. 5)
Arizona’s ‘Liquidation Sale’ sign has been up since last season. Boyd has had a solid campaign with the ‘Yotes and that could put him on a contender in need of bottom-six depth later in the season.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Washington
16. Calle Jarnkrok, RW/LW - Seattle Kraken
Traded to Flames (Mar. 16)
Jarnkrok generated trade interest last season while in Nashville, but the Preds got on a heater and held firm. This season, in Seattle, the Kraken look to be sellers by the trade deadline and Jarnkrok, who can become a UFA this summer, is a prime candidate to be moved.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Washington, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, NY Rangers
18. Rasmus Ristolainen, RD - Philadelphia Flyers
Signed extension with Philadelphia (Mar. 10)
The Flyers paid a hefty price for Ristolainen last summer. They are trying to sign him to an extension, but failing that, they will try to retain some assets for him by the trade deadline. He can become a UFA in July and the team would rather acquire something for him rather than lose him for nothing in the off-season. Philly may also retain a portion of his contract to help facilitate a trade.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Carolina, Calgary, St. Louis
19. Brandon Hagel, LW - Chicago Blackhawks
Traded to Tampa Bay (Mar. 18)
The Blackhawks are taking many calls on Hagel, who has two more years left on his contract at a very reasonable cap hit. Several teams looking for quality on their third or fourth line are looking at Hagel, and the price tag is believed to be hefty.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Tampa Bay, Toronto, Edmonton, Washington
21. Tyler Toffoli, RW/LW - Montreal Canadiens
TRADED TO cALGARY (Feb. 14)
The Habs are evaluating all of their options and teams are calling about almost every player. Toffoli is one of them. He has two-years left on his contract after this season and is a valuable piece for Montreal, so there are no certainties GM Kent Hughes moves him. But if a team is willing to pay a premium for Toffoli, who plays an offensive game on top of being a penalty killer, the Habs will listen.
25. Nick Ritchie, LW - Toronto Maple Leafs
Traded to Arizona
The Maple Leafs are trying to shed salary for other additions ahead of the deadline and both Ritchie and Travis Dermott have been made available as GM Kyle Dubas tries to maneuver the cap. Ritchie has struggled this season, so moving him isn’t an easy task. He has one-year left on his contract after this season.
30. Ilya Lyubushkin, RD - Arizona Coyotes
Traded to Toronto
The Coyotes have multiple pieces up for grabs, as GM Bill Armstrong has made known across the League, and one of the assets he is expected to deal ahead of the deadline is Lyubushkin, an affordable sturdy defenceman. Contending teams looking to strengthen their third-pair or add depth to their blueline will be calling.
35. Tomas Hertl, C/RW - San Jose Sharks
Signed 8-year extension with SJ (Mar. 16)
The Sharks are trying to get Hertl locked up to a long-term contract extension, which is why he wasn’t added to our Trade Watch List until Mar. 9, but failing a new deal, the Sharks will take trade offers for the 28-year-old.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
NY Rangers, Florida, St. Louis
