Trevor Zegras, forward
The Anaheim have spoken with a number of teams about the possibility of trading forward Trevor Zegras for the last two years and those discussions appear to be continuing.
Zegras, 23, has one more year left on his contract and comes with a $5.75 million salary cap hit. He currently ranks among the players on the TFP Trade Watch List.
After battling injuries last season, the expectation from Anaheim was that he would have a rebound campaign and boost his offensive numbers back to the 60+ point pace after collecting more than 60 points in each of the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
During Wednesday’s edition of “The Latest” on TFP presented by CCM Hockey, Kate Petterson and David Pagnotta discussed Zegras’ availability and how likely a move is to occur by the March 7 trade deadline.
“They’re still listening on Trevor Zegras. When we added him to the 2.0 list a couple of weeks ago, he’s still on there now on the new one, we started to hear more of Zegras’ name kind of out there,” Pagnotta explained. “They haven’t shied away from taking calls on Trevor Zegras. He has another year left on his contract at $5.75 million, then he’ll become a restricted free agent. He’s only 23. But he hasn’t had the type of season they anticipated.
“It’s funny, he played 31 games last season before being shut down, had six goals, nine assists, and 15 points. He’s played 31 games this season, exact same numbers. They wanted to see an incline in his offensive production, because it would help the trade talks in trying to move him out.”
It is unclear what type of return Ducks GM Pat Verbeek wants in exchange for Zegras, but the Ducks have been looking to upgrade their blueline and that could come in a return for Zegras if they pull the trigger.
“We’ll see where that goes, but he is available,” Pagnotta said. “They don’t want to give up on him, they still value him highly. And if it doesn’t happen now, we could see something happen in the summer, but those talks are still possible now as Anaheim continues to listen.”
