TRADE WATCH LIST 2023
TOP 30
aS OF March 3, 2023 | 5:00pm ET
The 2022-23 NHL Trade Deadline arrives on Friday, March 3, 2023 at 3pm ET.
As we do every season, TFP has outlined some of the top names rumoured to be available according to various media reports and our own league-wide sources. Last season, 27 players listed came off the board. In 2021, 19 listed players were traded, and 24 players were moved in 2020.
This page will be updated frequently and TFP’s panel of experts will outline each player’s value. Some players may climb or fall off the list, while others may be added.
NOTE: Teams linked to players are based off various media reports and internal sources.
1. James van Riemsdyk, LW - Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers are expected to move JVR by the deadline and appear to be willing to retain a portion of his $7M salary cap hit to help facilitate a deal — and it may take a third team to jump in and eat some salary too. But with so many moves already completed, JVR moves up to the No.1 spot.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Dallas, Minnesota, Winnipeg, Vegas, Carolina, Buffalo, Colorado
2. Brock Boeser, RW - Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks could finally put all the trade chatter surrounding Boeser to bed if they end up dealing him this season. His agent has been part of the process, but Vancouver won’t rush into a deal. He’s available and could be among multiple moves the Canucks make by the deadline after dealing Horvat to the Isles.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Minnesota, New Jersey, Philadelphia, NY Islanders, Washington, Calgary, Pittsburgh
3. John Klingberg, RD - Anaheim Ducks
Traded to Minnesota
Klingberg hasn’t had the season he had hoped, but teams know what he’s capable of. He has a 10-team trade list (not no-trade list) as part of his contract and the Ducks are expected to try to move him by the deadline and may have to retain part of his contract to make a move happen.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Seattle, Edmonton, Carolina, Winnipeg
4. Kevin Hayes, C - Philadelphia Flyers
As TFP’s Anthony Di Marco first reported, the Flyers have made Kevin Hayes available and are open & willing to trading the All-Star centre, who has 3 more years left on his contract and owns a 12-team no-trade list. The Flyers will almost certainly need to retain a chunk of Hayes’ contract to make a trade work, be it now or in the off-season. A $4 million to $5 million Hayes is a lot more attractive than one making over $7M per season.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Colorado, Carolina, Winnipeg
5. Max Domi, C/LW - Chicago Blackhawks
Traded to Dallas
The Blackhawks may try to sign him to a new deal, and at the time of this update, the belief is a 3-4 year extension is in the works, but if a deal falls through, Domi is an excellent candidate to be moved by the trade deadline. There are plenty of teams looking for depth scoring and he can certainly provide that and energy come playoff time.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Vegas, Toronto, Dallas, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Minnesota
6. Jonathan Quick, G - Columbus Blue Jackets
Traded to Vegas
Quick was completely blindsided by Los Angeles trading him to Columbus, but the Blue Jackets are trying to flip him to a contender. They’re in “serious discussions” with the Golden Knights, as TFP’s David Pagnotta first reported, but the financials may pose a problem. We’ll see where this goes.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Vegas, Toronto, Pittsburgh
7. Nick Bjugstad, C/RW - Arizona Coyotes
Traded to Edmonton
Arizona has kept Bjugstad out of the lineup in advance of an expected trade. He’s in the final year of his contract and comes at a very, very affordable cap hit of $900K.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, NY Islanders
8. Tyson Barrie, RD - Nashville Predators
The Predators picked up Barrie from Edmonton in a move involving Mattias Ekholm and word is Nashville is open to flipping him to another club in need of an offensive-minded blueliner who can run a powerplay. He has one more year left on his contract after this season.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
9. James Reimer, G - San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are willing to move Reimer, but the market is very thin. The price tag isn’t expected to be high for the pending UFA goaltender. He also owns a 5-team no-trade list.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Toronto, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, New Jersey
10. Kevin Labanc, LW/RW - San Jose Sharks
Labanc has one more year left on his contract and has been experiencing a rebound season with the Sharks. For a team looking for stability in their middle-six, a rejuvenated Labanc can provide that. He’d like a change, and the Sharks are trying to make that happen.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Calgary, New Jersey, Dallas
11. Jordan Greenway, LW/RW - Minnesota Wild
Traded to Buffalo
Greenway is in Year 1 of a three-year, $9 million contract. The Wild are looking for improvements this season, but are also trying to clear some cap space for the next couple of seasons and moving Greenway’s deal is possible. There is interest in the player and he could be dealt by the deadline.
Teams reportedly Linked:
San Jose, Philadelphia, Vancouver
12. Torey Krug, LD / Colton Parayko, RD - St. Louis Blues
As TFP’s David Pagnotta first reported in early-February, the Blues have received calls on Parayko. Teams have also asked about Torey Krug. Both players own no-trade clauses. The Blues haven’t indicated either player is untouchable, but it would take a significant offer for St. Louis to even consider a move.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Edmonton, Florida, Minnesota, Winnipeg, Vegas, Ottawa
13. Dmitry Kulikov, LD/RD - Anaheim Ducks
Traded to Pittsburgh
Kulikov is another piece the Ducks have made available and will try to move before the deadline. He also owns an 8-team no-trade list and comes with a decent cap hit, which could be attractive to contenders looking to strengthen their D corps.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Boston, Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, Toronto
14. Joel Edmundson, LD - Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens are asking for a first-round pick as part of a deal for Edmundson, who has another year left on his contract. Montreal seems willing to move him, but might hold off until someone’s willing to pay up.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Carolina, Los Angeles, Toronto, Seattle, Calgary
15. J.T. Miller, C/LW - Vancouver Canucks
Miler’s 7-year, $56M contract extension kicks in July 1 and it includes a full no-trade clause. The Canucks are taking calls and exploring the market on Miller and in the two weeks leading up to the deadline, his name has come up more often.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Carolina, Seattle, Pittsburgh
16. Cam Talbot, G - Ottawa Senators
The Senators are playing better hockey and were dangling Talbot to teams looking to secure their goaltending position. He’s set to become a UFA this summer and Ottawa could retain some salary, but with Ottawa back in the playoff mix, they may hold on to him as their own rental, so to speak.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Pittsburgh, Vegas, Buffalo
17. Nick Ritchie, LW - Arizona Coyotes
Traded to Calgary
The Coyotes are open for business, and Ritchie has proven he can provide some extra punch for a team looking to bolster its bottom-six.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, Edmonton
18. Dante Fabbro, RD - Nashville Predators
Re-signed with Nashville
The Predators are actively shopping Fabbro and are expected to move him by the deadline. Nashville is listening on almost everyone and with change needed, Fabbro could be in a new sweater sooner than later. He’s also a pending RFA.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
San Jose, Ottawa, Columbus, Edmonton
19. Ivan Provorov, LD - Philadelphia Flyers
As reports have surfaced over a strained relationship between team and player, TFP’s Anthony Di Marco and David Pagnotta have added the Flyers are willing to listen to offers on Provorov. It is unclear if a formal trade request has been made, but Philly will take calls and a change of scenery could occur closer to the trade deadline — if not, look for talks to carry out into the summer.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Los Angeles, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg
20. Adam Henrique, C/LW - Anaheim Ducks
Henrique has one more year left on his contract, and after picking up his game last season and continuing it this campaign, he might have peaked the interest of some teams looking to add a versatile forward to the lineup.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Seattle, Carolina, Colorado
21. Andreas Athanasiou, LW - Chicago Blackhawks
The Hawks are willing to move Athanasiou, but they shouldn’t expect a big return. He comes with a $3M cap hit, has put up semi-decent numbers and could add speed to a contender’s bottom-six.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Dallas, Minnesota, Winnipeg
22. Matt Dumba, RD - Minnesota Wild
Dumba can become a UFA this summer and there doesn’t seem to be much cap space to keep him beyond this season. The Wild have been up front with Dumba about his future and trading him is a possibility ahead of the deadline. He owns a 10-team no-trade list, so he has some say in where he could end up.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Ottawa, Boston
23. Justin Holl, RD - Toronto Maple Leafs
The Maple Leafs are looking to clear some cap space after acquiring Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty and Justin Holl’s name continues to pop up. He is on an expiring contract and comes with a $2M cap hit, and he owns a 10-team no-trade clause.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
24. Justin Braun, RD - Philadelphia Flyers
Teams looking for an inexpensive No.7 defenceman for a Cup run will be looking at Braun, who has a $1M cap hit. He’s a UFA this summer and could add experience to a contending team’s backend.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Toronto, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg, Carolina, Minnesota
25. Conor Sheary, RW/LW - Washington Capitals
The Capitals and Sheary’s camp briefly discussed an extension, but those talks are being pushed to the summer. Washington is listening and he’s an affordable, solid bottom-six player for a contender.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Seattle, Carolina, Winnipeg, Dallas
26. Jonathan Drouin, LW - Montreal Canadiens
The Habs are willing to retain about 50% of Drouin’s $5.5 million cap hit to make a move work, if a team is willing to take a chance on him for the stretch run.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Colorado
27. Sean Walker/Matt Roy, RD - Los Angeles Kings
The Kings have a surplus of right-shot defencemen and moving out one of them could be in the cards for GM Rob Blake this season. They want to improve their left side, and moving out a player like Walker (more likely) or Roy (less likely) in a deal could help them.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Ottawa, Arizona
28. Sean Monahan, C - Montreal Canadiens
If the Canadiens can’t get Monahan locked up to an extension, they will try to trade him ahead of the deadline. Still injured at the time of this update (Feb. 9), he’s having a bounce-back season with the Habs.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Colorado, Seattle, Winnipeg
29. John Gibson, G - Anaheim Ducks
Gibson returns to our Trade Watch List for another season. There’s chatter the Ducks are once again willing to explore a move, and despite denials, he would be open to a change of scenery. He also owns a 10-team no-trade list.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Pittsburgh
30. Erik Karlsson, RD - San Jose Sharks
We’re keeping Karlsson on the list because when the GM says he’ll listen, there’s a decent-enough chance a trade could go down. We aren’t expecting a Karlsson trade this season — this could be an off-season move — but talks have picked up with multiple contending teams, so it’s worth keeping a close eye on.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Florida
TOP 10 BUBBLE LIST
Josh Anderson, RW/LW - Montreal Canadiens
Montreal hasn’t wavered from its stance on Anderson — if you want him, you better pay up. But his name keeps being tossed around the trade winds and the Canadiens don’t deem him untouchable. An interesting player to keep an eye on.
Nick Bonino, C - San Jose Sharks
Traded to Pittsburgh
The Sharks are willing to listen on Bonino, who’s on an expiring contract. He’s got playoff experience and is a serviceable bottom-six centre on a contending team.
Conor Garland, RW/LW - Vancouver Canucks
Garland’s name continues to circulate around the NHL, and it’s popped up a little bit more since the Canucks moved Horvat to the Islanders. Garland has three more years left on his contract after this season and word is Canucks management has made him available since the current regime took over.
Vladislav Namestnikov, RW/LW - San Jose Sharks
Traded to Winnipeg
The Sharks picked up Namestnikov from Tampa, but the plan is to flip him to another team. Whether they can or not remains to be seen. He’s a UFA this summer.
Nick Schmaltz, C - Arizona Coyotes
The Coyotes are taking calls on Schmaltz, who has three more years left on his contract after this season. His actual salary increases a decent amount after this season, and that could be the reasoning behind why Arizona is listening.
Carson Soucy, LD - Seattle Kraken
The Kraken are in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, but with Soucy set to become a UFA this summer, they seem to be looking to see if anyone will pay a high price to acquire him. He’s out there, but Seattle won’t give him away.
Troy Stecher, RD - Arizona Coyotes
Traded to Calgary
Stecher is in the final year of his contract and can become a UFA this summer. He’s got playoff experience and could help serve as a third-pair or No.7 defenceman for a playoff contending team.
Oskar Sundqvist, RW/C - Detroit Red Wings
Traded to Minnesota
The Red Wings are listening on a number of players, including Sundqvist, who is in the final year of his contract. He’s got Cup experience for contenders looking to add to their bottom-six will show up.
Jakub Vrana, RW - Detroit Red Wings
Traded to St. Louis
As TFP’s David Pagnotta reported, Vrana’s tenure with the Detroit organization is expected to come to an end — either via trade by the deadline or this off-season, or the buyout route in the summer.
Filip Zadina, RW - Detroit Red Wings
The Wings are active ahead of the deadline and Zadina’s name is popping up once again. They’ve dangled him as bait before and he’s available once again as Detroit shakes up their roster.
PLAYERS TRADED
1. Timo Meier, LW/RW - San Jose Sharks
Traded to New Jersey
Meier is eligible to become a restricted free agent this summer, and while he does come with a $10M qualifying offer, any team that acquires him will have worked out a contract extension, eliminating any concern over his Q.O. If the Sharks find an offer they like, they’ll give the acquiring team the ability to negotiate a contract with his agent.
1. Jakob Chychrun, LD - Arizona Coyotes
Traded to Ottawa
TFP’s David Pagnotta first broke the news on NHL Network at the start of the 2021-22 season about Chychrun’s availability. The trade chatter has continued, and LA is still believed to be leading the race. The price tag of 3-4 assets hasn’t changed, and that includes a first-round draft pick and another piece of first-round value. He has two years left on his contract after this season.
1. Bo Horvat, C - Vancouver Canucks
Traded to Islanders
Trade talks are believed to have picked up in recent days, at the time of this update (Jan. 21). While there’s still a chance the Canucks’ management brass wakes up one morning and decides to give Horvat what he wants, it still appears likely that the Canucks will trade him by the deadline. Horvat rejected the team’s latest 7-year offer in November, and GM Patrik Alvin keeps working the lines.
2. Patrick Kane, RW - Chicago Blackhawks
Traded to NY Rangers
Kane is now waiting for the Rangers to make their cap space work so they can fit him in and put this long saga to bed. At the time of this new update (Feb. 28), a move can occur on this day or Wednesday. The Blackhawks will have to retain as much as half of his salary cap hit.
3. Tyler Bertuzzi, LW - Detroit Red Wings
Traded to Boston
There still haven’t been any recent meaningful contract talks between Detroit and Bertuzzi’s camp, and while Detroit took him off the market recently, the Wings have put him back on the block in hopes of getting a first-round pick as part of a deal for him. He’s in the final year of his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent in July.
4. Vladislav Gavrikov, LD - Columbus Blue Jackets
Traded to Los Angeles
Columbus tried to re-sign Gavrikov, going back to the summer, but they’ve come up empty. They gave permission to his agent to talk to teams, but an extension seems unlikely. He’s set to become an UFA on July 1 and the team is asking for a first-round pick in a package for him. A trade with Boston was expected, but that fell through when the Bruins went a different direction.
5. Ryan O’Reilly, C - St. Louis Blues
Traded to Toronto
O’Reilly is in the last year of his contract and if the Blues can’t work out a short-term extension, GM Doug Armstrong might trade his captain. With Tarasenko already dealt, ROR is the next big fish in St. Louis that could generate a significant return.
5. Ivan Barbashev, LW/C - St. Louis Blues
Traded to Vegas
Barbashev is another player the Blues are expected to move by the deadline and he has generated significant interest from teams trying to strengthen their middle-six. After a 60-point campaign last season, his production has dropped off, but the price tag starts with a second-round pick and a prospect.
6. Vladimir Tarasenko, RW - St. Louis Blues
Traded to NY Rangers
Tarasenko is likely playing in his last season in St. Louis. He’s a UFA in July and the Blues might benefit from moving him, even if they climb back into playoff contention. But Tarasenko owns a full no-trade clause and will dictate where he ends up, if dealt.
7. Luke Schenn, RD - Vancouver Canucks
Traded to Toronto
Vancouver might still try to sign Schenn to an extension, but it’s possible the Canucks move him to a Cup contender and revisit contract talks in the off-season when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. There’s plenty of interest, but will a team pay a third-round pick (or more) for him?
10. Shayne Gostisbehere, LD - Arizona Coyotes
Traded to Carolina
Chychrun isn’t the only Coyotes blueliner likely on the move. Gostisbehere has rebounded nicely this season and has caught the attention of the league. Arizona could retain part of his $4.5M cap hit to make a trade work, but a recent injury that puts him on the shelf until around the deadline may lower his price tag.
10. Sam Lafferty, C/RW - Chicago Blackhawks
Traded to Toronto
Lafferty is generating interest and has one more year left on his contract at just a $1.15M cap hit. That’s an attractive asset for a team looking for an affordable upgrade to its bottom-six.
11. Mattias Ekholm, LD - Nashville Predators
Traded to Edmonton
The Predators are reportedly shopping Ekholm and have made him available. He’s in Year 1 of a four-year, $25M contract and does not own any no-trade protection.
11. Jake McCabe, LD - Chicago Blackhawks
Traded to Toronto
McCabe has two more years left on his contract after this season and comes with a $4M cap hit. The Blackhawks are willing to deal him and his name is starting to make the rounds.
13. Mikael Granlund, C/LW - Nashville Predators
Traded to Pittsburgh
Granlund’s name has popped up more in the week leading up to the trade deadline. He has two more years left on his contract after this season at a $5M salary cap hit, and given the how thin the forward market has become, he could be a target for a few teams.
14. Gustav Nyquist, RW/LW - Columbus Blue Jackets
Traded to Minnesota
Nyquist was putting up a decent season with the Blue Jackets until his season-ending injury. But he is expected to be back come playoff time. He’s in the final year of his contract and has attracted plenty of interest, even given his health.
16. Jesse Puljujarvi, RW - Edmonton Oilers
Traded to Carolina
The Oilers want to move on from Puljujarvi and his $3M cap hit. That’s no secret. But where he ends up, at this point, is still anybody’s guess. Edmonton needs to clear up cap space for other moves and Puljujarvi’s likely playing in his last season with the Oilers, regardless.
20. Dmitry Orlov, LD - Washington Capitals
Traded to Boston
The Capitals haven’t decided what they plan on doing with Orlov just yet. The team is in the thick of the playoff race in the East, and even though contract talks haven’t progressed — Orlov is a pending UFA — Washington could hold on to him if they stay in the wildcard hunt.
21. Lars Eller, C - Washington Capitals
Traded to Colorado
The Capitals are taking calls on a number of their pending UFAs, and having already dealt Orlov & Hathaway, Washington is open for business. Eller has Stanley Cup experience and a solid cap hit for contenders looking to strengthen their middle-six.
22. Nino Niederreiter, LW/RW - Nashville Predators
Traded to Winnipeg
The Predators are slipping and there’s some chatter they’d explore moving Niederreiter, who has one year left on his contract after this season.
30. Ryan Merkley, RD - San Jose Sharks
Traded to Colorado
News recently broke that Merkley has requested a trade out of the Sharks organization. He was picked 21st overall in 2018 and has spent this year in the AHL and a change of scenery with another club could do him wonders.
30. Garnet Hathaway, RW - Washington Capitals
Traded to Boston
There seems to be plenty of interest in Hathaway given his expiring contract and what he offers to a bottom-six forward group. Contenders like Boston and Tampa Bay have been lurking and if the Capitals decide to sell, he could be an option.
33. Evgenii Dadonov, RW - Montreal Canadiens
Traded to Dallas
Montreal will have to eat some of Dadonov’s contract, but there is believed to be some interest in him leading up to the deadline. It may not yield a big return, but the Canadiens are willing to move him. He owns a 10-team no-trade list, which he holds firm on.
Joonas Korpisalo, G - Columbus Blue Jackets
Traded to Los Angeles
There are some teams looking at their goaltending position and wondering if they should make an add by the deadline. Korpisalo, on an expiring contract, could be an option for a contender looking for security in net.
Tanner Jeannot, RW - Nashville Predators
Traded to Tampa Bay
The Predators have been trying to get Jeannot signed to an extension, but there is plenty of interest in the 25-year-old. He’s a pending RFA and only comes with a $800,000 cap hit. With Nashville pretty much in sell-mode, they could be convinced into a move.
Vitali Kravtsov, RW - New York Rangers
Traded to Vancouver
The Rangers are once again shopping Kravtsov and he could be on the move by the trade deadline. He’s an RFA in the summer, so any team that acquires him will still have control over the player.
Nikita Zaitsev, RD - Ottawa Senators
Traded to Chicago
Zaitsev has been on the block for some time, and a deal may be gaining traction. TFP’s David Pagnotta first reported on Feb. 10 that the Senators are looking to include a sweetener to a team that is willing to take on his contract, and that could be a second-round pick.
Craig Smith, C/RW - Boston Bruins
Traded to Washington
The Bruins are trying to free up cap space to make another addition and Smith’s name has been floating around once again. He has a $3.1M cap hit and is on an expiring contract.
Noel Acciari C/RW - St. Louis Blues
Traded to Toronto
For teams looking to deepen their bottom-six, Acciari is on their radar. He has an attractive cap hit and comes with playoff experience, with 54 post-season games under his belt.
Niko Mikkola, LD - St. Louis Blues
Traded to NY Rangers
The Blues are willing to listen on all of their pending free agents, and that includes Mikkola, who has drawn interest from multiple clubs and has an attractive cap hit.
