SUMMER TRADE WATCH 2024
TOP 25
aS OF July 5, 2024 | 4:50pm ET
With the 2024 Stanley Cup Final underway, teams have started to map out their plans to reshape their rosters for the 2024-25 campaign.
As we do every season, TFP has outlined some of the top names rumoured to be available this summer according to various media reports and our own league-wide sources. Omitted from the list are pending Unrestricted Free Agents.
This page will be updated frequently and some players may climb or fall off the list, while others may be added.
1. Mitch Marner, RW - Toronto Maple Leafs
Marner wants to stay in Toronto, that much is clear. But the Leafs will be taking calls from select teams and if they feel they’ve received an offer that they would accept, they’ll go to Marner about waiving his no-movement clause. Marner holds all the cards, but if push comes to shove, for the right environment, we believe he will waive.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Vegas, Nashville, Chicago, Dallas
2. Jacob Trouba, RD - New York Rangers
Trouba has a 15-team no-trade list and has some say in where he could end up, but the Rangers are actively shopping him and are trying to trade him ahead of the start of the new season. Trouba has two years remaining on his current contract.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Detroit, Buffalo, Anaheim, Nashville
3. Nikolaj Ehlers, LW/RW - Winnipeg Jets
It’s believed Ehlers would welcome a move, as TFP’s David Pagnotta has reported. He has one more year left on his contract and owns a 10-team no-trade list. The Jets are listening and willing to make a move if the right offer presents itself.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Boston, NY Islanders, Nashville, Seattle, Ottawa, Carolina
4. Martin Necas, LW - Carolina Hurricanes
Necas is looking for a change and prefers a bigger role on another club. Carolina holds his rights, however, and unless they find a trade worth accepting, they’ll hold on to him. He does, however, have arbitration rights and that could sway the Hurricanes into making a move. There is plenty of interest out there.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Montreal, Calgary, Philadelphia, Nashville, Seattle, Boston, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Utah, Buffalo, Chicago
5. Rutger McGroarty, RW - Winnipeg Jets
McGroarty has voiced his discontent with the Jets, as he wants to make the jump to the NHL next season and Winnipeg has hesitated to this point. As a result, the 2022 14th overall pick wants to explore his options elsewhere and the Jets are trying to trade him.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Boston, Montreal, NY Islanders, Buffalo, Carolina, Anaheim
6. Jakob Chychrun, LD/RD - Ottawa Senators
Traded to Washington (July 1)
Once again, the Senators are willing to take calls on Chychrun, who is entering the final year of his contract. It will be interesting to see how the club navigates the trade waters, as they’re looking for a right-shot defenceman, a No.1 goalie and some more scoring depth up front. Moving Chychrun could help fill a void.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Boston, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Washington, Calgary, Chicago
7. Trevor Zegras, LW - Anaheim Ducks
Zegras is a dynamic player who hasn’t scratched his full potential, which has a number of teams very interested. But Anaheim is also of that same belief and moving him would take a significant asset or package to get it done. As TFP’s David Pagnotta has reported, Zegras would be open to a move and prefers a bigger market. We’ll see if anything comes of this over the off-season.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Montreal, Philadelphia, Nashville, Chicago, Boston, NY Rangers, Calgary, Buffalo
8. Aaron Ekblad, RD - Florida Panthers
The Panthers are open to trading Ekblad, who is now in the final year of his contract. Ekblad, who recently changed representation, would like to stay in South Florida, but the Panthers will not entertain a deal with a higher AAV than Ekblad’s currently making. Florida is exploring its trade options.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
TBD
9. Patrik Laine, RW/LW - Columbus Blue Jackets
Laine wants and needs a fresh start and the Blue Jackets are willing to give it to him. But new-GM Don Waddell has a tough task ahead of him, as Laine’s $8.7M cap hit will be a tough hurdle. Columbus may have to retain part of that deal or take back a contract or two in a trade.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
TBD
10. David Savard, RD - Montreal Canadiens
For teams looking to add a strong, reliable defender to their blueline, Savard checks a lot of boxes. He is entering the last year of his contract and could bolster a Cup contender’s blueline in 2024-25.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Dallas, Colorado, Winnipeg
11. Reilly Smith, RW/LW - Pittsburgh Penguins
Traded to NY Rangers (July 1)
The Penguins tried to move Smith during the season and GM Kyle Dubas will continue to explore options this off-season. Smith seems to prefer a move and now playing on an expiring deal, he may be easier to move.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Vegas, Los Angeles, Colorado, Utah
12. Filip Gustavsson, G - Minnesota Wild
Minnesota has made Gustavsson available for trade in a heavy goalie-heavy trade market. The Wild aren’t desperate to move him, but given the marketplace and his attractive cap hit, they could work out a move in and around the NHL Draft.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Carolina, Buffalo, Los Angeles, San Jose, Vegas
13. Yaroslav Askarov, G - Nashville Predators
With Juuse Saros locked up to a new eight-year extension in Nashville, it seems as if Askarov’s future in the NHL won’t be with the Predators. Nashville’s exploring the trade market and is taking calls on Askarov, who is ready to make the jump to the NHL.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
14. Kaapo Kakko, RW - New York Rangers
The Rangers continue to dangle Kakko as trade bait. As GM Chris Drury looks to bolster his lineup for next season, as the Rangers have their eyes set on the 2025 Stanley Cup, Kakko’s time could be running out as they look for upgrades.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Buffalo, Minnesota, Anaheim, Vancouver
15. Jean-Gabriel Pageau, C - New York Islanders
As the Islanders explore ways to free up extra cap dollars, they’re reportedly still willing to move Pageau in the right move. He has two years remaining on his contract and comes with a 16-team no-trade list; he will have plenty of say in where he ends up, if moved.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
TBD
15. Ryan McLeod, C - Edmonton Oilers
Traded to Buffalo (July 5)
The Oilers began shopping McLeod at the NHL Draft and he is still believed to be available. Edmonton isn’t rushing to move him, but it seems like the writing is on the wall. He’s in the final year of his contract before becoming an RFA.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
TBD
17. Arthur Kaliyev, RW - Los Angeles Kings
Kaliyev wants a trade and an opportunity for more ice time and responsibility on another team. The Kings will try to make that request a reality this off-season, and prefer to package him in a deal for an upgrade on the roster.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Dallas, Montreal, San Jose, Buffalo, Ottawa
18. Colton Parayko, RD - St. Louis Blues
Parayko’s name continues to swirl around the trade winds, as it has for the last two seasons. He has a full NTC and five more years left on his contract. It’ll take a big deal, and his approval, to make something happen, but the Blues are exploring their options and seem set on moving at least one of their defenceman this off-season.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa
19. Shea Theodore, LD/RD - Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights want to keep Theodore in the fold, but teams are starting to call and inquire about his availability, primarily due to how tight Vegas is up against the cap. Theodore has another year left on his contract and Vegas has a lot of holes to fill. Moving him would create cap space.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Toronto
20. Mario Ferraro, LD - San Jose Sharks
The Sharks aren’t itching to trade Ferraro, but they have made it known that they’ll trade him if the right offer came across their desk. He has a very attractive cap hit and two more seasons on his deal. The price tag is high, but San Jose is open to moving him.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Winnipeg, Carolina, Boston
21. Marco Rossi, C - Minnesota Wild
As TFP first reported, the Wild have made Rossi available and are looking for a hockey trade, a talent-for-talent swap. Rossi is an RFA this July and plenty of teams will be calling.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Philadelphia, Calgary, Utah, Montreal, Ottawa
22. Scott Laughton, C/LW - Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers will continue to take calls on Laughton, who has two years left on his contract. Last summer, Philadelphia wanted a low first-round pick for him and that price tag doesn’t seem to have changed.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Buffalo, Colorado, Ottawa
23. Oliver Wahlstrom, RW - New York Islanders
The Islanders are willing to move Wahlstrom, but it is unclear as to the manner in which they could trade him — do they package him in a deal for an upgrade elsewhere, or add him as a sweetener to take on a bigger contract?
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Pittsburgh, Anaheim, Chicago
24. Timothy Liljegren, LD - Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs are willing to move Liljegren and have reportedly made him available. Toronto is set on a Stanley Cup appearance in 2025 and packaging Liljegren in a deal for an upgrade, either up front or on the blueline, may be the preference.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
25. John Gibson, G - Anaheim Ducks
Here we go, again. Gibson’s name is out there for another trade deadline, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get moved. He has some no-trade protection with a 10-team no-trade list, and three more years left on his contract.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Detroit, Carolina, Buffalo
PLAYERS TRADED BEFORE JULY 1
2. Jacob Markstrom, G - Calgary Flames
Traded to New Jersey
Markstrom is still willing to sign off on a trade to the Devils, but can the two sides finally reach the finish line? Other teams are poking around, and it’s clear Markstrom wants this matter to be resolved sooner rather than later.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
New Jersey, Toronto, Ottawa, Carolina
4. Linus Ullmark, G - Boston Bruins
Traded to Ottawa
Ullmark prefers to ride out the final year of his contract in Boston, but the Bruins are weighing their options and will continue to conduct trade talks with interested teams. Ullmark has some say in where he may end up, and teams that tried to get him during the season are circling back.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit, Carolina
13. Andrew Mangiapane, RW - Calgary Flames
Traded to Washington
With one more year left on his contract, teams are calling the Flames about Mangiapane and whether they can pry him out of Calgary. His goal-production has dipped after scoring 35 in 2021-22, but teams still believe at his age he is capable of putting up 25+.
Teams reportedly Linked:
New Jersey, Washington, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Carolina
15. Ilya Mikheyev, RW/LW - Vancouver Canucks
Traded to Chicago
The Canucks are reportedly shopping Mikheyev to free up extra cap space as they look to make some major additions this off-season. Mikheyev has two more years left on his contract and owns a 12-team no-trade list.
