SUMMER TRADE WATCH LIST 2023
aS OF July 2, 2023 | 11:40am ET
With the 2022-23 season now in the rearview, teams have already started to reshape their rosters for the 2023-24 campaign.
As we do every season, TFP has outlined some of the top names rumoured to be available this summer according to various media reports and our own league-wide sources.
Omitted from the list are pending Unrestricted Free Agents, as they are on expiring contracts.
This page will be updated frequently and TFP’s panel of experts will outline each player’s value. Some players may climb or fall off the list, while others may be added.
NOTE: Teams linked to players are based off various media reports and internal sources.
1. Alex DeBrincat, RW - Ottawa Senators
DeBrincat has painted a clear picture for the Senators. Ottawa tried to move him around the NHL Draft, but came up short. Now, they continue their attempts to deal him and his agent has permission to talk contract with other clubs.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Detroit, Florida, Vegas, Anaheim, NY Islanders, Dallas, Seattle, St. Louis
2. Erik Karlsson, RD - San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are working with Karlsson and his camp to find him a new home. The 2023 Norris Trophy winner comes with an $11.5 million cap hit and the Sharks have only had the appetite to retain around $3 million of that. This could result in a third-team entering the mix to broker a deal.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Pittsburgh, Carolina, Toronto, Seattle
3. Connor Hellebuyck, G - Winnipeg Jets
Teams got scared after it was leaked that Hellebuyck wants $9M+ on his next contract. Trade talks have since cooled, which isn’t ideal for Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, and this could turn into a move that happens later in the summer or after the season gets going.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Buffalo, New Jersey
4. Mark Scheifele, C - Winnipeg Jets
Winnipeg’s clearly active this off-season and teams looking at a new No.1 centre will be giving the Jets a call about Mark Scheifele. He is entering the final year of his contract and it doesn’t sound like a long-term stay is in the cards. The Jets need to continue to shake things up and moving out Scheifele will do that.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Boston
5. Brett Pesce, RD - Carolina Hurricanes
Contract talks between the Hurricanes and Pesce’s agent hit a snag at the time of this latest update and after Carolina made some moves to their blueline, Pesce might be on the outs.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Buffalo, Edmonton, San Jose, Dallas, Nashville
6. Noah Hanifin, LD - Calgary Flames
Hanifin is entering the last year of his contract and the Flames have been exploring the market on him. Calgary GM Craig Conroy wants to keep tinkering with his lineup this summer and moving Hanifin could be part of that.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Florida, Toronto, St. Louis, Dallas
7. John Gibson, G - Anaheim Ducks
As TFP reported last season, Gibson has been open to a change of scenery and that message has become clearer this off-season. Gibson owns a 10-team no-trade list as part of his contract and will have some say in where he ends up.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
8. Scott Laughton, F - Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers have dangled Laughton out there and teams called. According to multiple sources, there were been at least two legitimate offers on the table for Laughton’s services prior to the NHL Draft, but Philly balked. He has three-years left on his contract and comes with a $3M AAV.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton
9. Elias Lindholm, C - Calgary Flames
The Flames are aggressively trying to sign Lindholm to an extension, but failing that will force them to trade him at some point. He’s in the final year of his contract and has been iffy on wanting to stay.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
10. Evgeni Kuznetsov, C - Washington Capitals
Kuznetsov’s name popped up in trade speculation during the season and that has carried into the summer. The Capitals want to remain competitive, which means any move involving Kuznetsov will likely result in a replacement coming back the other way.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Nashville, Calgary
11. Colton Parayko, RD - St. Louis Blues
The Blues entertained the possibility of moving Parayko ahead of the trade deadline and they’re willing to listen once again this summer. He owns a full no-trade clause and will have a say in where he ends up, if moved, but the Blues clearly want to trade one of their pricey defencemen and he’s leading the list.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Columbus, Calgary, Winnipeg
12. Mikael Backlund, C - Calgary Flames
Yet another Flame who won’t stay long-term, Backlund is out there for teams looking for a veteran centre to bolster their middle-six. He owns a 10-team no-trade clause and has some say in where he ends up.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
TBD
13. Carter Hart, G - Philadelphia Flyers
Teams have been calling about Hart and Philadelphia GM Danny Briere has been taking their calls. A move isn’t likely to occur until after the Hockey Canada investigation findings are revealed, with Hart part of that WJC roster, but the Flyers have had trade talks and are willing to move him if the right deal is presented.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Toronto, Montreal
14. Travis Konecny, F - Philadelphia Flyers
Teams continue to ask about Konecny’s availability and the Flyers are willing to listen. Philly isn’t actively shopping him, but if the right offer is presented, the team will consider it.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Detroit, St. Louis
15. Nikita Zadorov, LD/RD - Calgary FLames
TFP has learned that Zadorov is another player not interested in signing an extension with the Flames. He’s been out there since prior to the Draft as Calgary tries to maneuver the trade market on several players.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Vancouver, Florida
16. Adam Henrique, C/LW - Anaheim Ducks
Henrique has one year left on his contract and owns a 10-team no-trade list. With the Ducks in full rebuild mode, moving Henrique to a team in need of a middle-six upgrade could be in the cards.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Chicago, NY Islanders
17. Dan Vladar, G - Calgary Flames
The Flames have received interest in Vladar and with Jacob Markstrom and his big contract in net, Calgary could make a move if the right offer presented itself.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Toronto, Buffalo, Anaheim
18. Sam Reinhart, RW - Florida Panthers
The Panthers are up against the salary cap and even after moving out Anthony Duclair, dealing Reinhart and his $6.5M cap hit would give the club more flexibility to add. He’s in the final year of his contract.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
TBD
19. Matt Grzelcyk, LD - Boston Bruins
The Bruins have explored ways to free up additional salary cap space and Grzelcyk’s name has popped up as a potential candidate. He’s in the final year of his contract and does not own any no-trade protection.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
20. Cody Ceci, RD - Edmonton Oilers
Ceci could be the casualty of Edmonton trying to free up extra cap space to make other additions to the roster. He does not own any no-trade protection and has two-year left on his contract.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
21. Kevin Labanc, LW/RW - San Jose Sharks
TFP reported during the season that Labanc would welcome a change of scenery and that remains true this off-season. The Sharks have made him available, and while he is entering the last year of his contract, he does come with a $4.725M cap hit.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
22. Conor Garland, RW - Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks began their off-season planning by buying out the contract of Oliver Ekman-Larsson and creating cap space. Garland was traded with OEL to Vancouver and his name has continuously circled around the rumour mill as the Canucks continue to explore options to reshape their roster.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
23. Lawson Crouse, LW - Arizona Coyotes
Arizona has taken calls on Crouse going back to last season. He’s a big body with an eye for the net and he owns a respectable cap hit for his potential. If the Coyotes move him, it will be in a solid “hockey trade” that will yield a good package in return.
Teams Reportedly Linked:
Winnipeg, Toronto, Buffalo
24. Mike Hoffman, RW - Montreal Canadiens
Hoffman’s going into the last year of his deal and the Canadiens are willing to deal him for the right price. Teams interested in bolstering their powerplay and adding secondary scoring will explore Hoffman’s availability.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
25. Tony DeAngelo, RD - Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers have a trade in place with Carolina, but that move can’t be official until July 8. So, for now, he remains last on our Summer Trade Watch List.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Carolina
PLAYERS TRADED
1. Pierre-Luc Dubois, LW/C - Winnipeg Jets
Traded to Los Angeles
Dubois made it clear he wants out of Winnipeg and his agent is working with the Jets to help make a move happen. He is believed to be willing to move to a select few teams, similar to Matthew Tkachuk last season, so Winnipeg will explore all of its options.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Montreal, NY Rangers, Nashville, Los Angeles, Calgary
6. Kevin Hayes, C - Philadelphia Flyers
Traded to St. Louis
The Flyers would like to move Hayes this off-season and are also considering a potential buyout. There is interest and the Flyers are willing to eat a chunk of his contract, but the overall price tag will be affected by how much Philly retains.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Columbus, Boston, Dallas, St. Louis, Carolina, Minnesota, Detroit
10. Anthony Duclair, LW/RW - Florida Panthers
Traded to San Jose
The Panthers are trying to create some cap space and as TFP first reported, they are actively shopping Anthony Duclair, who is in the final year of his contract and comes with a $3M cap hit.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Calgary, Vancouver, Nashville, St. Louis
12. Tyler Toffoli, RW - Calgary Flames
Traded to New Jersey
Toffoli has made it clear to the Flames that he won’t sign an extension. Thus, the Flames are looking to trade him for a younger asset, if they can.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Toronto, New Jersey, NY Islanders
15. Josh Bailey, RW - New York Islanders
Traded to Chicago
As TFP reported in May, the Islanders are weighing their options with Bailey and are looking to move him and his $5M cap hit this off-season. Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello acknowledged the possibility of this relationship coming to an end, with Bailey entering the final year of his contract.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Chicago, Arizona
19. Alex Iafallo, LW - Los Angeles Kings
Traded to Winnipeg
The Kings may need to get creative this summer with their cap as they try to address a could of needs — the goaltending position and solidifying their top-nine corps. Los Angeles is looking to move talent-for-talent and Iafallo could be the odd man out up front.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Winnipeg
20. Yegor Sharangovich, RW - New Jersey Devils
Traded to Calgary
The Devils are trying to move our Sharangovich, who his a restricted free agent. This could come in a sign-and-trade, but he’s very much in play as New Jersey tries to add a veteran scorer to the lineup.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
22. Ross Colton, LW - Tampa Bay Lightning
Traded to Colorado
Tampa Bay’s up against the salary cap, and while they do have a $6.875 million cushion by placing Brent Seabrook on LTIR, the team may not be able to afford the new contract Colton is going to receive. He’s a pending RFA and might have priced himself out of Tampa.
Teams reportedly Linked:
TBD
23. Joel Edmundson, LD/RD - Montreal Canadiens
Traded to Washington
The asking price on Edmundson during the regular-season included a first-round pick. Now that he is entering the final year of his contract, we’ll see if that changes.
Teams reportedly Linked:
Edmonton, Carolina, Washington, Seattle
