SUMMER TRADE WATCH 2022
TOP 35
aS OF July 16, 2022 | 3:40pm ET
The off-season trade watch got off to a solid start with Montreal trading Shea Weber to Vegas and Kevin Fiala, who was going to debut as No.2 on our list, being traded by Minnesota to Los Angeles before we had a chance to unveil this list.
As we do every year, both in the off-season and ahead of the Trade Deadline, TFP has outlined some of the top names rumoured to be available according to various media reports and our own league-wide sources.
Omitted from the list are pending Unrestricted Free Agents, such as Filip Forsberg, as they are on expiring contracts.
This page will be updated regularly and TFP's panel of experts will outline each player's value. Some players may climb or fall off the list, while others may be added. Teams linked to players with reported interest will also be added and adjusted as more information becomes available.
NOTE: Teams linked to players are in no particular order.
1. Jakob Chychrun, LD - Arizona Coyotes
TFP’s David Pagnotta first reported on NHL Network at the start of the 2021-22 season that teams had inquired about Chychrun’s availability last off-season. That interest carried into the season and up until the trade deadline. The Coyotes stuck to their guns on the asking price, that still hasn’t changed. It will cost a significant package to get Chychrun out of Arizona (3-4 assets), and teams are still trying to make it happen. Chychrun has three-years left on his contract.
TEAMS REPORTEDLY LINKED:
Los Angeles, Florida, Carolina, Boston, Anaheim, St. Louis, Toronto, Columbus
2. J.T. Miller, LW/C - Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks have been speaking with Miller’s camp for the last month in an attempt to find out whether a contract extension is possible or not. Vancouver is also fielding trade inquiries for Miller, who has one-year left on his contract. Several teams have interest and if the Canucks realize they can’t sign him to the 6-year offer that’s on the table, trading him might be the next step.
linked to:
New Jersey, NY Rangers, Pittsburgh, NY Islanders, Toronto, Washington
3. Blake Wheeler, RW - Winnipeg Jets
Wheeler has a five-team trade list that kicks in July 13, but it seems as if he’s willing to consider additional options if they are presented to him. The Jets are listening, but he comes with a hefty price tag and a large cap hit. It’s unclear what Winnipeg’s asking price truly is, but the belief is the Jets aren’t looking for solely future assets.
linked to:
TBD
4. Jeff Petry, RD - Montreal Canadiens
Traded to Pittsburgh
Petry would still welcome a move from Montreal and the Canadiens are still trying to make that happen. The Habs aren’t simply willing to give Petry away for a mid-tier draft pick, even if it means clearing his cap hit. Canadiens GM Kent Hughes will continue to take calls and a move could happen around the NHL Draft. Petry has three-years left on his contract and owns a 15-team no-trade list.
TEAMS REPORTEDLY LINKED:
Dallas, Philadelphia, Carolina, Detroit
5. John Gibson, G - Anaheim Ducks
Prior to the trade deadline, TFP’s David Pagnotta reported on NHL Network the Ducks have received inquiries about Gibson, who owns a 10-team no-trade list. Fast forward to June and word starts to get out that Gibson is open to the possibility of being dealt, though he has never requested a trade out of Anaheim and has said publicly he’d prefer to stay. Still, multiple sources have indicated he understands a move is possible and the Ducks continue to listen.
linked to:
TBD
6. Vladimir Tarasenko, RW - St. Louis Blues
Tarasenko’s name started to pop up ahead of the NHL Draft again and still seems to be out there. He has one final year left on his current contract, but still has a full no-trade clause — if he’s dealt somewhere, it’ll be to a place of his choosing.
Linked To:
Carolina, Philadelphia, NY Islanders
7. Conor Garland, RW/LW - Vancouver Canucks
Garland was No.7 on last summer’s Trade Watch List when he was dealt to the Canucks. Oddly enough, he started at No.7 once again this summer. The Canucks made him available during the season and continue to listen to offers as Vancouver’s new management brass wants to retool and shake up its roster. Garland could be back on the move.
linked to:
Boston, Toronto, Edmonton, New Jersey, Seattle, Columbus, Pittsburgh
8. Tyson Barrie, RD - Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are looking to create cap space and Barrie’s name has popped up as a potential casualty of that almost immediately after the Oilers were eliminated from the playoffs. He has two-years left on his contract and does not own any no-trade protection.
linked to:
TBD
9. Jesse Puljujarvi, RW - Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are trying to bolster their roster this summer and are exploring the trade market for upgrades. Moving Puljujarvi in a deal seems to be a possibility as Oilers GM Ken Holland weighs his options. Puljujarvi is a pending restricted free agent.
linked to:
Ottawa, Nashville, Columbus, Montreal, Carolina
10. Tyler Bertuzzi, LW - Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings are still willing to take calls on Bertuzzi, a player that drew a lot of interest last season. With one-year left on his contract, Detroit has to decide if they view Bertuzzi as part of their future or if they consider him more valuable as a tradable asset.
Linked To:
Philadelphia, Boston, New Jersey
11. Travis Konecny, LW/RW - Philadelphia Flyers
Teams continue to speak with the Flyers about Konecny, who has three years left on his contract. Philadelphia is open to moving him in a ‘hockey trade’ that will see talent move for talent, but the team does not appear interested in moving him for future assets. With a light free agent crop this year, teams could circle back and step up to try to acquire him from the Flyers.
Linked To:
TBD
12. John Marino, RD - Pittsburgh Penguins
Traded to New Jersey
The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to move either Marino or Pettersson, which is why both are on our list. Marino comes with a $4.4M cap hit and is signed for the next five seasons. There is interest, and it seems like a matter of when, not if, he’ll be moved.
Linked To:
Vancouver, Ottawa, New Jersey, Dallas
13. Brent Burns, RD - San Jose Sharks
Traded to Carolina
Sharks GM Mike Grier said if Burns wants to move to a contender and go after a Stanley Cup, he would try to accommodate him. So far, that discussion hasn’t taken place (at the time of this update), but it allows us to now place Burns on this list, as we know the Sharks are looking to somehow free up some cap space and plan on retooling some of their roster.
linked to:
Dallas, Carolina
14. Alex Killorn, LW - Tampa Bay Lightning
The Lightning don’t want to move Killorn, and after shipping Ryan McDonagh to Nashville, they might not have to, but if they want to keep the rest of their team together, ‘Killer’ might be another odd man out. He has one-year to go on his contract ($4.45M cap hit) and owns a 16-team no-trade list. He really wants to stay in Tampa, but it may take some more genius work by GM Julien BriseBois and his staff to keep Killorn, Ondrej Palat (UFA) and Jan Rutta (UFA) on the Bolts.
Linked To:
TBD
15. Max Pacioretty, LW - Vegas Golden Knights
Traded to Carolina
The Golden Knights are trying to free up some additional salary cap space and Pacioretty’s name has been floating around for the last few days, at the time of this update. He has one-year left on his contract and owns a 10-team no-trade list.
Linked To:
NY Islanders, Carolina
16. Mackenzie Weegar, RD/LD - Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers are going to be in cap trouble in summer 2023 and with a Jonathan Huberdeau extension in the offing, a new deal for Weegar might not be in the cards. He has one-year left on his contract and teams have called Florida about his availability.
linked to:
Ottawa, Dallas
17. Josh Bailey, RW/LW - New York Islanders
Like Varlamov, moving Bailey would primarily be a cost-related deal for the Islanders. Bailey has two-years left on his contract at a $5 million cap hit. He could end up being the odd-man out if the Isles can’t find a way to bolster their roster and remain cap compliant.
linked to:
Arizona, Seattle
18. Alec Martinez, LD - Vegas Golden Knights
Another team trying to clear cap space is Vegas and Martinez could be on the outs. He has a 16-team no-trade list that turns into a 12-team no-trade list on July 13, so he has some say in where he may potentially end up, if dealt. The addition to Shea Weber doesn’t help Vegas out fully and more cap-clearing moves will be needed.
linked to:
TBD
19. Patric Hornqvist, RW - Florida Panthers
The Panthers are trying to free up some cap space and moving Hornqvist and his $5.3 million cap hit would help. He owns an eight-team no-trade list, so he has some say. Panthers GM Bill Zito is exploring his options and moving Hornqvist could be on the horizon.
linked to:
Seattle
20. Tyler Myers, RD - Vancouver Canucks
Myers’ name was floating around the rumour mill ahead of the trade deadline as Vancouver was believed to be testing the market to gauge interest. Now, as his full no-trade clause shifts to a 10-team no-trade list, the Canucks are expected to explore their options as they look to retool their roster.
Linked To:
Ottawa
21. Christian Dvorak, C - Montreal Canadiens
Teams have been calling about Dvorak since before the trade deadline and there appears to be a continued level of interest from some teams. The Habs may wait until after the first day of the NHL Draft to make a move, if they receive a strong-enough offer.
Linked To:
TBD
22. Pierre-Luc Dubois, C - Winnipeg Jets
The Jets have been quietly exploring their options for Dubois after the team was informed he plans on testing the free agent waters as a UFA in July 2024. Winnipeg would love to keep him long-term, but unless he has a change of heart, his future as a Jet might be short.
linked to:
NY Rangers, Montreal
23. Pavel Zacha, C/LW - New Jersey Devils
Traded to Boston
Zacha is a pending restricted free agent. His time in New Jersey might be running out, primarily due to the team’s depth up the middle. The Devils explored some options during the season and trade talks are expected to pick up around/leading up to the NHL Draft.
linked to:
TBD
24. Anthony Beauvillier, LW/RW - New York Islanders
The Islanders are looking for a top-tier forward and packaging Beauvillier could help them land one. His name is floating around NHL circles and with two years left on his contract, it’s possible he could be dealt if the right deal presented itself.
linked to:
Montreal, Anaheim, Dallas, Seattle
25. Alex Kerfoot, C/LW - Toronto Maple Leafs
Kerfoot has a 10-team no-trade list that kicks in July 13. It will be the last year of his current contract and his $1.95M bonus was paid out on July 1, which means he’s due $750,000 in salary the rest of the 2022-23 season. Financially, it could fit for a club, though his cap hit remains $3.5M. As the Leafs maneuver their off-season, Kerfoot could be a casualty of their cap situation.
Linked To:
TBD
26. Connor Brown, RW/LW - Ottawa Senators
Traded to Washington
Brown has informed the Senators that he wants to test the free agent market in 2023, when his contract expires. Ottawa will listen to offers as they try to retool and add pieces to their roster.
Linked To:
TBD
27. Jake Allen, G - Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens are listening on Allen, but the price tag is believed to be pretty high. Teams are looking for goalie options and the Habs have one, but prefer to keep him unless another team ‘overpays’ for his services.
Linked To:
Edmonton, Toronto, Washington
28. Gabe Vilardi, RW/C - Los Angeles Kings
The Kings checked off one item on their “off-season to-do list” by landing Kevin Fiala from Minnesota. Next on the agenda is finding a top left-shot defenceman and some teams have expressed interest in Vilardi as part of a package. Drafted 11th overall in 2017, Vilardi still has solid value and he could be a main piece to another big LA trade.
Linked to:
Arizona, Philadelphia, Chicago
29. Mike Hoffman, RW/LW - Montreal Canadiens
The Habs are still looking to tinker with their roster and Hoffman’s name has popped up around the league, which could be a result of the team landing Evgenii Dadonov from Vegas. He has two-years left on his contract and for contenders looking for a sniper and powerplay specialist, Hoffman could be their guy.
linked to:
TBD
30. Max Comtois, LW - Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks made it known they were willing to take calls on Comtois during the season and all indications are that hasn’t changed. At 23, with one-year left on his contract, Comtois is controllable and a change of scenery could do him wonders.
linked to:
TBD
31. James van Riemsdyk, LW/RW - Philadelphia Flyers
JVR could be another casualty of the salary cap, this time in Philadelphia, as the Flyers are trying to shed some dollars and generate extra cap flexibility as GM Chuck Fletcher is expected to be quite active this summer. JVR has a $7 million cap hit and it might take a sweetener to get a deal done.
linked to:
Seattle, Arizona, Buffalo
32. Justin Holl, RD - Toronto Maple Leafs
Holl seems to be the odd-man out in Toronto, as the Leafs look to create extra cap space and have a deeper blueline that might not have room for him. Holl has one-year ($2M cap hit) left on his contract and could be a solid third-pair add for a team.
linked to:
TBD
33. Tanner Pearson, LW - Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks are listening on Pearson, who has a limited no-trade clause. They’re trying to shake up their roster even more this off-season and trading Pearson is an option for them.
Linked To:
TBD
34. Semyon Varlamov, G - New York Islanders
The Islanders want to free up cap space and moving Varlamov would help. He has one-year left at a $5 million cap hit and owns a 16-team no-trade list. With Ilya Sorokin locked into the No.1 role on the Island, moving Varlamov could not only help cap wise, but it would generate a decent return.
Linked To:
Washington
35. Adam Henrique, C/RW - Anaheim Ducks
There has been some chatter surrounding Henrique’s future in Anaheim. He has two-years left on his contract, owns a 10-team no-trade list and had a rebound season in 2021-22. Would the Ducks be willing to retain part of his $5.5M cap hit?
Linked To:
NY Rangers, Boston
OFF THE BOARD EARLY
2. Kevin Fiala, LW - Minnesota Wild
Traded to Los Angeles
The Wild are set on trading Fiala due to their salary cap issues — he’s simply priced himself out of what Minnesota can afford. Wild GM Bill Guerin has plenty of options and has escalated trade talks of late. Fiala is likely to be on the move before the NHL Draft; something to keep an eye on.
linked to:
New Jersey, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Philadelphia
2. Alex DeBrincat, LW - Chicago Blackhawks
Traded to Ottawa
The Blackhawks are actively engaged in trade calls involving DeBrincat, and several teams continue to expressed interest. However, the very hefty price tag of 3 to 4 assets is significant. Still, teams are hoping a package of top young NHL talent and a first round pick will persuade Chicago into making a move. DeBrincat has one more year left on his contract before he becomes a restricted free agent.
linked to:
New Jersey, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Ottawa, NY Islanders, Seattle
7. Ryan McDonagh, LD - Tampa Bay Lightning
Traded to Nashville
The Bolts are trying to create cap space to keep the bulk of their team together, and that sadly means someone has to fall on the grenade. In this case, it seems like McDonagh is that guy. Tampa and McDonagh’s camp are working together to try to find him a new home, which, if achieved, would presumably free the Lightning of his $6.75 million cap hit. Something to watch.
Linked To:
St. Louis
11. Tony DeAngelo, RD - Carolina Hurricanes
Traded to Philadelphia
DeAngelo is set to become a restricted free agent on July 13. The Hurricanes would like to keep him after the season he just had, but they have also given DeAngelo’s camp permission to speak with other teams and see if he can get a better deal elsewhere, assuming he’d want to leave the ‘Canes for that club. It’s up in the air right now, but if he commands a big contract, Carolina might walk away and move him.
Linked To:
TBD
22. Matt Murray, G - Ottawa Senators
Traded to Toronto
Murray already nixed a trade to Buffalo, but is open to other options. The Senators are trying to trade him but will need to retain some money on his contract. He has two-years left on his contract at a $6.25M cap hit and it might take more creativity (a third team?) to get a deal done.
Linked to:
Toronto, Edmonton
25. Alexandar Georgiev, G - New York Rangers
Traded to Colorado
The Rangers will be upping their efforts to move Georgiev, who is set to become a restricted free agent on July 13. It’s no secret the net in the Big Apple belongs to Igor Shesterkin. Georgiev understands that, but he still prefers a change of scenery - somewhere that will give him a shot to become a No.1
Linked to:
TBD
26. Cam Talbot, G - Minnesota Wild
Traded to Ottawa
With Marc-Andre Fleury back in Minnesota, teams may be exploring the price tag on Talbot, whom the Wild say they like and want to hold on to. We’ll see if a team steps up for him if they miss out on other options.
Linked To:
TBD
31. Vitek Vanecek, G - Washington Capitals
Traded to New Jersey
The Capitals are looking to get better between the pipes and could package one of Ilya Samsonov or Vanecek in a deal for a proven No.1 goalie. Both Samsonov and Vanecek are pending restricted free agents are are controllable.
