On Thursday morning, TFP’s David Pagnotta reported the Detroit Red Wings and restricted free agent forward Lucas Raymond have picked up contract discussions and are focused on coming to terms on a long-term agreement.

Late Thursday evening, Pagnotta then reported the Red Wings and RFA defenceman Moritz Seider were also engaged in ongoing contract negotiations that are also centered around a long-term deal.

“They aren’t there yet, but they are talking a lot and trying to hammer away and get this done,” Pagnotta said Thursday morning regarding Raymond. “The focus is still on long-term, and talks have gained traction, but they’re still grinding away at it.”

Pagnotta then reported on X that similar discussions have been underway involving Seider.

“Like Raymond, I can confirm the Wings are also working/focused on long-term contract with Seider, as well,” Pagnotta wrote on X. “And like Raymond, there’s still work that needs to be done before a new deal is finalized.”

Separate sources have told TFP the Red Wings and Seider’s camp, led by agent Claude Lemieux, are working towards a long-term deal, with one source suggesting the finances are the last hurdle.

“Given the contracts dished out to young defencemen lately, it’s hard to argue that Mo is not worth in that ballpark, if not more,” one league source suggested. “Look at the market value and go from there.”

One immediate comparable is the eight-year, $68 million extension Brock Faber signed with the Minnesota Wild this summer, a deal that comes with an $8.5 million average annual value, a benchmark for Seider negotiations.

With Seider and Raymond negotiations escalating, training camps are set to begin on Sept. 18 across the NHL. The Red Wings have 12 days until players report and will be utilizing this time to try and get both players, along with fellow RFA forward Jonatan Berggren, inked to new contracts.

In 82 games with the Red Wings last season, Seider registered nine goals and 33 assists for 42 points.
