Contract negotiations between the Dallas Stars and restricted free agent defenceman Thomas Harley are ongoing, as the two sides are trying to work towards a short-term agreement.

According to TFP’s David Pagnotta, who discussed the current landscape of the RFA market on NHL Network on Monday, the Stars and Harley are focused on a short-term contract.

Citing sources, Pagnotta reported Monday that Dallas does not have the necessary salary cap space, despite having just over $6.243 million in current space, to accommodate a long-term agreement.

Harley, 23, registered 15 goals and 32 assists for 47 points in 79 games with the Stars last season.

With training camps across the NHL getting underway Wednesday, starting with physicals, Harley is unlikely to attempt camp without a new deal in place.

Negotiations between Stars GM Jim Nill and Harley’s agent Andy Scott are expected to continue Tuesday as the two sides attempt to hammer out a deal this week.
