The Edmonton Oilers and superstar centre Leon Draisaitl are putting the finishing touches on an eight-year contract extension worth a total of $112 million, sources have confirmed to TFP.

A deal between the two sides is expected to be finalized this week, as early as Tuesday, as negotiations picked up over the last week and majority of terms agreed upon over the long-weekend.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman also reported Tuesday morning the Oilers and Draisaitl’s camp “have made significant progress on a contract extension.”

Talks between the Oilers and Draisaitl covered an array of options, from a shorter termed deal in the three-to-five year range to a full max term of eight years.

Draisaitl’s new $14 million average annual value, once signed, will make him the highest paid player in NHL history based on AAV.

Drafted third-overall by the Oilers in 2014, Draisaitl has generated 347 goals and 503 assists for 850 points in 719 career NHL regular-season games, thus far.
