The Toronto Maple Leafs have been engaged in contract negotiations with multiple players ahead of the start of their season.

Forwards Matthew Knies and John Tavares and defenceman Jake McCabe are all playing on expiring contracts and talks with all three players began over parts of the summer leading into training camp.

Though a new deal for each player is not imminent, contract talks appear to be more advance with McCabe’s representatives.

As TFP’s David Pagnotta reported on Tuesday during our Game Day segment with Dennis Bernstein ahead of the Utah Hockey Club’s first game in Salt Lake City, talks are progressing between the Leafs and McCabe.

“It certain sounds like, and the update I got ahead of this game here on Tuesday, is that they’re having pretty decent conversations, and that those negotiations could intensify in the coming days,” Pagnotta said.

McCabe, who turns 31 on Oct. 12, is in the final year of a four-year, $16 million contract.

In 73 games with the Leafs last season, McCabe registered eight goals and 20 assists for 28 points – all career highs – along with 56 penalty minutes.
