BRIND’AMOUR WANTS TO STAY, BUT OFFER PULLED

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour has made it clear he wants to stay in Raleigh and continue coaching the Canes well beyond this season.

As his team prepares for their second-round series next week against the New York Rangers – their full second-round schedule is still to be announced – Brind’Amour told the Raleigh News & Observer he’s unsure where his future currently stands.

“It’s in Tom’s hands,” Brind’Amour told the paper via text message in reference to Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon.

Both Dundon and Hurricanes GM Don Waddell remain confident a deal will be reached, though TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on Wednesday that the club’s latest offer has been pulled off the table.

“Recently, a deal seemed close, but it’s believed the offer to extend the highly respected coach has been pulled,” Dreger wrote on X. “Sources say Brind’Amour wants to stay, but may have to test the market if an agreement can’t be reached.”

TFP’s David Pagnotta later reported Brind’Amour may be waiting for his coaching staff to be retained, as well, and properly compensated.

While this isn’t a distraction the team wanted at this point in the season, it has raised eyebrows around the league and speculation over which teams could try to poach Brind’Amour away from Carolina if he hits the open market has already started, with the Seattle Kraken and Toronto Maple Leafs deemed potential suitors.

If Brind’Amour hits the open market, he could become one of the highest paid coaches in NHL history.
