DEVILS TRYING TO GET TOFFOLI SIGNED
Tyler Toffoli, right wing
The New Jersey Devils are hoping to get goal-scoring right wing Tyler Toffoli locked up to a multi-year contract extension and prefer to hold on to him instead of trading him ahead of Friday’s 3pm ET trade deadline.
Toffoli, 31, is in the final year of a four-year, $17 million contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. He does not own any no-trade protection, but the Devils have made it a priority to extend him, a source close to the team confirmed to TFP on Sunday night.
Several teams have expressed interest in trading for Toffoli if he decides not to sign a new deal with New Jersey. The Los Angeles Kings inquired last week, as TFP first reported, but with the uncertainty surrounding Adrian Kempe’s injury, they may not have the salary cap space to accommodate an add.
The Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars are two other teams believed to have some interest in Toffoli.
Toffoli is due a raise from his $4.25 million cap hit – he is making $3.5 million in actual salary this season – but it is unclear what type of dollars he is seeking on his next deal. He could seek a contract worth around $6.5 million to $7 million per season.
In 60 games with the Devils so far this season, Toffoli has registered 26 goals and 18 assists for 44 points.
