As the San Jose Sharks rebuild, GM Mike Grier is open to adding veteran players to his lineup at both ends of the ice.

As previously reported, the Sharks are interested in adding to their blueline and will be exploring both trade and free agent options in the coming weeks.

The backend, however, is not the only area the team wants to upgrade and deepen, as they expressed interest in Philadelphia Flyers veteran Cam Atkinson, according to TSN‘s Darren Dreger, and may be on the verge of re-acquiring forward Barclay Goodrow via waivers from the New York Rangers.

Atkinson, 35, is entering the final year of his contract and is a potential buyout candidate if the Flyers are unable to move him. He owns a 10-team no-trade list and the Sharks are believed to be one of the teams on his list.

Goodrow, who spent the first five and a half seasons of his NHL career with the Sharks, has three years remaining on his six-year, $21.85 million contract. He has a 15-team no-trade list and comes with a $3,641,667 cap hit.

The 31-year-old was placed on waivers on Tuesday and according to the New York Post, there may be a pre-arranged deal with the Sharks to claim him.

With more than $36 million in salary cap space, the Sharks have plenty of room to add to their roster and Grier is hoping to land a few veterans to play alongside, and groom, some of their young, rising stars.

In 80 games with the Rangers this past season, Goodrow registered four goals and eight assists for 12 points, and 78 penalty minutes.
