DEVILS STILL TRYING TO LAND MARKSTROM

The New Jersey Devils continue to be engaged in trade negotiations with the Calgary Flames over acquiring goaltender Jacob Markstrom.

The two teams came close to making a move mid-season, in February, but talks trickled off after the Flames refused to retain any salary on Markstrom’s contract. Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald and Flames GM Craig Conroy remain in ongoing trade talks now.

Markstrom, who has two years left on his contract and comes with a $6 million salary cap hit, owns a full no-movement clause and was prepared to sign off on a trade to New Jersey during the season, as first reported by TFP’s David Pagnotta. That mindset is not believed to have changed, as Markstrom is still willing to waive his NMC for the Devils.

Reports have surfaced over other clubs inquiring about Markstrom, including the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs, however trade talks seem to be well focused between Calgary and New Jersey.

The Senators are trying to move goalie Joonas Korpisalo and his $4 million salary cap hit and that is not a point of interest for Calgary.

If the Flames and Devils complete a swap, a goaltender is not expected to be heading to the Flames in a move. According to Pagnotta, Devils forward Alexander Holtz was part of the return during the season. It is unclear, at this point, if he could be in a deal now.

The Devils are also looking to add a scoring winger to their lineup and some teams have been calling Calgary about forward Andrew Mangiapane, who is entering the final year of his contract.
