The Carolina Hurricanes are in the process of finalizing a blockbuster 3-way trade with the Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche, and are acquiring left wing Taylor Hall from Chicago and superstar Mikko Rantanen from Colorado.
The Avalanche are acquiring forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury, a 2025 second-round draft pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick from the Hurricanes, while the Blackhawks are getting a 2025 third-round draft pick via Carolina.
Rantanen has not agreed to a contract extension as part of this trade.
The Blackhawks are retaining half of Rantanen’s $9.25 million salary cap hit in this trade.
“Mikko is one of the premiere power forwards in our sport,” said Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky. “It’s no secret that we’ve wanted to add elite skill to our lineup, and this is a player who should fit our system and locker room well. And Taylor gives us another high-skill option to bolster our attack.”
Rantanen, 28, registered 25 goals and 39 assists for 64 points in 49 games with the Avs this season. He is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Hall, 33, is also in the final year of his contract and picked up nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 46 games with Chicago this season.
In 49 games with the Hurricanes this season, Necas registered 16 goals and 39 assists for a team-leading 55 points. He comes with a $6.5 million cap hit and has one more year left on his contract after this season.
Drury, 24, accumulated three goals and six assists for nine points in 39 games with Carolina.
