The San Jose Sharks are expected remain active over these next two months leading up to the March 7 trade deadline and one player that will generate interest is centre Mikael Granlund.

Granlund, 32, is in the final year of a four-year, $20 million contract and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

The native of Oulu, Finland, leads the Sharks with 35 points (11 goals, 24 assists) in 40 games so far in the 2024-25 campaign and has been a spark for them this season.

As TFP’s David Pagnotta reported last month, the Sharks and Granlund’s camp will have contract discussions now that the calendar has flipped to 2025 and assess and discuss his future with the organization.

It is unclear as to the type of contract Granlund would be looking for, or if the Sharks would entertain signing him to a multi-year deal, but those conversations will take place and that will determine whether the Sharks explore trading him ahead of the deadline.

If Sharks GM Mike Grier makes Granlund available, several playoff contenders looking to add to their top-six will be calling.

Teams like the Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes are all scouring the market for a top-six forward and could come calling if Granlund is up for grabs.

The Sharks currently sit 15th in the Western Conference and 31st in the NHL with a 13-23-6 record through 42 games.
