The Carolina Hurricanes have been engaged in trade negotiations with the Vancouver Canucks about centres Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller, and while those discussions continue, GM Eric Tulsky is also believed to be having conversations with other teams, as well.

According to multiple reports, the Hurricanes are very active in the trade market as they try to acquire a top-six forward to add to their roster.

It seems like it is Carolina’s preference to get a deal done well in advance of the March 7 trade deadline, but Tulsky will not rush into a move.

Last season, on the evening prior to the trade deadline, the Hurricanes made a big move by acquiring winger Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Guentzel picked up 25 points in 17 games with the Hurricanes, followed by nine points in 11 playoff games, but later joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as an unrestricted free agent in the summer.

Tulsky and the Canucks discussed a potential deal involving Pettersson last season, but according to TFP’s David Pagnotta, who reported the news at the time, the Hurricanes refused to include Martin Necas in a return. Pettersson later signed an eight-year, $92.8 million contract with Vancouver.

It is unclear as to the type of deal the Hurricanes and Canucks are discussing, though Miller appears to be the focal point.

The Hurricanes and New York Rangers are among the teams that have permission to speak with Miller’s agent to help facilitate a trade. Another two or three teams are also believed to have permission to do the same.
