As the Toronto Maple Leafs explore their options leading up to the March 7 trade deadline, one topic of discussion has been around John Tavares and his future with the organization.
The Leafs have no intention of moving Tavares, but the 34-year-old is on an expiring contract and the two sides have been in talks over an extension since September.
Tavares, who is in the final year of an eight-year, $88 million contract, will see his salary decline on his next deal, one he hopes will happen with the Leafs – and preferably ahead of the trade deadline.
“I certainly would love to get it done,” Tavares told the media Tuesday afternoon. “I mean, obviously the club has a lot going on. It’s not just about me.
“I know management will do what they have to do at that time of year and whatnot. So, if we have the opportunity to get it done, I’d love to do that. If not, when that time comes, we’ll get there. So, just looking forward to continuing my journey here as a Leaf – and obviously want it to continue past this season.”
As TFP’s David Pagnotta noted on Leafs Morning Take on Wednesday, the belief is a three-year deal is on the table for Tavares and the two sides need to finalize the dollars and cents. A timeline to getting a deal ironed out, however, is unclear.
Tavares could see his next AAV fall within the $6 million to $7 million range, though Pagnotta noted it may be closer to the $7 million mark.
In 51 games with the Leafs so far this season, Tavares has registered 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points.
