The St. Louis Blues are six points out of the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference and GM Doug Armstrong is starting to test the market on some of his players.

With several teams in the market for help up the middle, the Blues are reportedly talking to teams about captain Brayden Schenn, who owns a full no-trade clause and has three more years left on his contract after this season.

During Thursday evening’s edition of “Insider Trading” on TSN, Darren Dreger reported that there “is potential of Brayden Schenn being traded by the St. Louis Blues.”

“The top contenders looking at the market, looking for a centre, are interested (in Schenn), and that would include the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Dreger said. “The return would have to be mammoth. Is there a team that is willing to pay it? It’s too soon to say, but I do believe the Blues are at least testing or gauging the market to see what that level of interest is, and ultimately will probably have to make that call in the weeks ahead.”

While his salary cap hit is $6.5 million, his actual salary this season is $8 million before dropping to $6.5 million in 2025-26, $4.3 million in 2026-27, and $4 million in 2027-28. His full no-trade clause turned into a 15-team no-trade list July 1 and runs through the end of his contract.

In addition to the Maple Leafs, the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets are four other clubs also exploring the market for a centre.
