SEGUIN INJURY COULD GIVE DALLAS CAP FLEXIBILITY

Tyler Seguin, forward

With veteran forward Tyler Seguin out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, the Dallas Stars could be in a position to utilize his salary cap hit to add to the roster if he is deemed out of the balance of the regular-season.

Seguin, who comes with a $9.85 million cap hit, could be out until the end of April and if proves to be the case, the Stars could add a body up front and on the blueline without having to further maneuver the cap.

The Stars currently have $2.295 million in current cap space with forward Evgeni Dadonov on LTIR and GM Jim Nill has already been aggressively exploring the defensive market, as previous reported.

During a Tuesday appearance on NHL Tonight on NHL Network, TFP’s David Pagnotta indicated that the Stars could take advantage of losing Seguin until the post-season.

“The Dallas Stars have already been very aggressive in trying to add to their blueline. Chris Tanev (is) at the top of their list in terms of whom they’d like to add ahead of the deadline. They’ve spoken to Philadelphia about (Sean) Walker and (Nick) Seeler, and as well, another player on the defensive side, Matt Dumba with Arizona,” Pagnotta said. “They’re exploring a variety of different options. They’re willing to give up a first-round pick for the right deal. They feel their window is now.

“They’ve got a little bit of cap space right now, but the real thing is what happens with Tyler Seguin and his injury. If it’s serious enough, and I’m hearing the timeline for his potential return is in-and-around the end of the regular-season. If that extends – and they’re going to continue to monitor this and re-evaluate this situation later this week – if he is out until the end of the regular-season, that opens up an additional $9.85 million in cap space for Jim Nill to spend. He’s been given the green light to spend, it’s just a matter of finding the right deals to add to this group.”

If Seguin is out long-term until late-April, the Stars could enter the market for someone like Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel, Anaheim’s Adam Henrique, Ottawa’s Vladimir Tarasenko, or San Jose’s Anthony Duclair.
