RED WINGS, SABRES CONTINUE TRADE DISCUSSIONS
Steve Yzerman and Kevyn Adams
The Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings were engaged in trade discussions this month and those conversations are believed to be continuing as the calendar flips over to 2025.
It is unclear whom both teams are specifically discussing, at this point, but trade talks are believed to be fluid between the two clubs.
Last week, before the holiday roster freeze kicked in, TFP’s David Pagnotta reported both Buffalo and Detroit were involved in separate trade talks during “The Latest” segment and that both clubs were looking at making roster changes.
The Red Wings opted to make a coaching change on Thursday, bringing in Todd McLellan as their new Head Coach, but GM Steve Yzerman is still scouring the trade market.
On Saturday during Hockey Night in Canada, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the two teams “continue to scout each other” and added the two teams were working on something ahead of the freeze, which lifted at 12:01am (local time) on Saturday.
Multiple teams have reached out to the Sabres about a number of their players, including forwards Dylan Cozens, Jack Quinn and J.J. Peterka, and defencemen Bowen Byram and Owen Power.
The Sabres and Wings have ample salary cap space, as well, and could be creative in any move they make, either together or with other teams.
