The Vancouver Canucks are looking to find a new home for rugged defenceman Vincent Desharnais, whom they signed as a free agent in the summer.

Desharnais, 28, inked a two-year, $4 million contract with the Canucks on July 1, but according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, he is on the block.

“Vancouver is trying to find a better fit for Vincent Desharnais. It just hasn’t worked out as everyone hoped,” Friedman wrote in his latest ‘32 Thoughts’ column.

The Canucks have been in the market for a defenceman to enter their top-four and with limited cap space, moving Desharnais and his $2 million cap hit will give them more options to play with.

It is unclear which teams the Canucks are speaking with about Desharnais, but the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs were believed to have interest in signing him as a free agent – he left Edmonton to sign with Vancouver.

In 17 games so far this season with the Canucks, Desharnais has registered two assists and 15 penalty minutes.
