The New York Islanders announced on Tuesday that they are not renewing the contract of President and GM Lou Lamoriello and the club will begin its search for its next GM effective immediately.
As the club announced, Operating Partner John Collins will lead a search to find the next General Manager and according to TFP’s David Pagnotta, they are expected to cast a wide net and already have some options they would like to explore.
It is too early to speculate on whom the Islanders plan on pursuing, but former NHL GMs like Marc Bergevin and Chuck Fletcher are interested in new opportunities, while the likes of current Assistant GMs like Detroit’s Shawn Horcoff, Tampa Bay’s Jamie Pushor and New Jersey’s Dan MacKinnon have generated interest from other clubs in the past.
The Islanders have $28.3 million in salary cap space going into the 2025-26 season and the club’s next GM will have plenty of room to retool the roster.
Islanders are expected to cast a wide net in search for a new GM, with some potential candidates/targets already discussed internally. Per sources, Lou was informed of the team’s decision before the regular-season ended.
