The Boston Bruins are already focusing their efforts on retooling for the 2025-26 campaign, which begins with the search for a full-time head coach.
Speaking with the media on Wednesday, Bruins GM Don Sweeney addressed a variety of topics, including roster decisions this summer and finding a full-time bench boss.
Sweeney, who has already started speaking with coaching candidates, indicated that the club will give interim head coach Joe Sacco the opportunity to make his case for the full-time gig behind the bench.
“I spoke to Joe (Sacco) at length,” Sweeney said. “He’s aware that we’re going to have a coaching search. He’s aware that he’ll part of the final group of coaches that we get down to because I think he’s deserved that. Joe did a really, really good job.”
With just over $28.8 million in salary cap going into the 2025-26 season, Sweeney plans on being very active this off-season and will be exploring the restricted and unrestricted markets for possible additions via free agency.
Defenceman Mason Lohrei and forward Morgan Geekie are set to become restricted free agents July 1 and Sweeney indicated that he has already re-engaged in contract negotiations with Geekie’s camp on a new deal.
