SAYS
BERNSTEIN: Ask Brian Burke the last time Sergei scored a
big goal. Caps GM George McPhee could get whacked for
this one.
SAYS
WYSHYNSKI: Boy, there's a lot of Russians in DC. If this
were 50 years ago, there'd be air raid sirens!!
SAYS WYSHYNSKI: I am very pleased that Tuomo did not go to Pittsburgh. They already have Malkin and Crosby -- they simply can't be allowed to also corner to the market on Ruutus.
SAYS PAGNOTTA: This one really came out of left-field. Nobody expected to see the Habs move Huet at this stage. This could set things up for another trade or two along the way. SAYS WYSHYNSKI: Continuing the passing of the torch on this team away from Hanlon veterans to Bruce Boudreau newbies.
SAYS
BERNSTEIN: The price is wrong for Cristobal! Good move
for the Caps as Olaf Kolzig is really 57 years old.
To TB: G Mark Smith F Jussi Jokinen C Jeff Halpern
SAYS
BERNSTEIN: I love the Ducks, but this deal makes Dallas
a co-favorite in the West.
SAYS PAGNOTTA: Huge trade for Dallas, although I don't see the Stars being a Richards team. The Lightning get their hands on a good young goalie, potential future No.1, and depth players - exactly what they were looking for.
SAYS WYSHYNSKI: This either gives the Panthers a much-needed veteran on defense, or an upgrade at mascot.
SAYS BERNSTEIN: Not sure, but I don't see this move putting the Panthers into top 8. In any season. Don't they have any enforcers in the system?
SAYS PAGNOTTA: Great pick up for the Flyers. Prospal's cheap, and that'll allow the team to make another move on deadline day. Some question the package TB received, but Picard's a solid young defenseman. Decent move for both clubs.

REAL-TIME RUMOR MILL Update-to-the-minute (EST) talk and rumors from across the NHL
[5:25pm] Okay, looks like my day isn't done yet. I've
received tones of emails about today. Unfortunately, I can't
respond to all of them, so I'll try to answer a few here: - The Hawks had a deal for Lang, but it fell through. - The Islanders had a few offers for Satan and Fedotenko,
but nothing substantial. - Leafs, Sharks apparently had deal for Kubina, but he
nixed that. - Habs also inquired about Chicago's Havlat.
- Pens also asked about Brian Campbell, before he was
dealt to SJ. - Sharks, Panthers were talking about a trade involving
Marleau-Jokinen, but didn't materialize. I expect both players
to be moved by the June entry draft. - If you have any questions, please
e-mail me and I'll reply back
tonight and post your Q's and my A's on the site.
[5:00pm] Well, that's it for me. 24 trades, 44 players and
a load of draft picks! I love what Atlanta got for Hossa;
great trade for Sabres in dealing Campbell; Capitals vastly
improved; Penguins get their top winger but overpaid big time;
Habs, Canucks left scratching their heads; Leafs stick with
their big boys; Jagr's still a Ranger!
Thanks to everyone for visiting. We had a very hectic day, and
we hope you enjoyed it. Let the playoff race officially begin! [4:37pm] Canadiens asked about Martin Havlat after Pens
stepped up for Hossa, but obviously nothing worked out. [4:30pm] Blackhawks had deal in place for Lang, but
fell through. Ducks and Devils were interested. [4:20pm] Pavel Kubina of the Leafs was almost dealt,
but he stepped in and decided against waiving his no-trade
clause.
[4:08pm] I've received some emails asking about Hossa and
whether the Pens have asked about an extension. From what I'm
told, the answer is no. There is no extension in place for
Hossa, at least not now.
[3:59pm] The Canucks were trying to acquire a top-line
forward, but came up empty.
[3:52pm] Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher said a team offered a
deal for one of the players with a no-trade clause, but the
player nixed the deal.
[3:34pm] Montreal appears to be finished with the
deadline. They had some deals on the table, but they appear to
have fallen through.

agree to them before 3pm ET. Trade calls can occur more than
an hour after the deadline.

report yet.

Blake, Wellwood, Gill. . . Flyers looking for top-six forward.
[2:05pm] Bobby Holik could also be on the move in Atlanta. Four teams very interested.
[2:03pm] Sorry for the gap, been trying to get an understanding of the Hossa talk. Boston source says B's are out. Montreal is frontrunner, although Sharks still in mix. Habs want to sign Hossa to extension; it's believed offer includes 3 players. [1:43pm] As the Canadiens continue to work out a deal for Hossa, they're also looking to make another move to bring in a depth-forward. [1:34pm] Oilers have received plenty of interest in Steve Staios; likely to trade Roloson. [1:29pm] Minnesota, Vancouver, San Jose and Calgary have all asked about Olli Jokinen.
[1:25pm] Relatively quiet on the Rangers/Islanders front. All that means is that nobody's talking. Miro Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko could be gone, with Predators interested in both. [1:17pm] Wings discussing trade for LA defenseman Brad Stuart. [1:13pm] TSN says Fedorov's going to Washington. . . . meanwhile, waiting on word from Montreal. Habs have pull the trigger on a deal. [1:10pm] Just got confirmation that Fedorov's been traded. Details to follow... [1:08pm] Vancouver was trying to land Richards, but has shifted focus elsewhere. Chicago's Martin Havlat may be in play, although Hawks want equal talent in return.

[12:38pm] Dallas bows out of the Lapointe race, Marty gets traded to Ottawa. [12:21pm] Maple Leafs close to completing second trade. I'll pass on more info as it comes in. [12:10pm] Ruutu traded to Carolina; Penguins wanted him, lost out.
[12:03pm] Word is Blackhawks are about to trade Tuomo Ruutu. Martin Lapointe, meanwhile, will be moved, we're still waiting on confirmation.
[11:55am] Hockey world all shocked over Huet trade; Habs aren't finished though.
[11:49am] According to TSN, Montreal has traded Cristobal Huet to Washington for a 2nd rounder.
[11:46am] Blue Jackets and Blackhawks, both fell out of the Richards race, are looking to make significant changes by the 3pm deadline.
[11:43am] Vancouver has asked about Florida's Olli Jokinen.
[11:39am] Brad Richards has accepted a trade, it looks like Dallas. [11:26am] TSN
is reporting that Campbell has been traded to Sharks.
[11:24am] Source in Buffalo telling me the Sabres have traded Brian Campbell. Team currently unknown.
[11:16am] Leafs might not be done, with Matt Stajan, Kyle Wellwood and Jason Blake possibly on the move.
[11:15am] Belak traded to Florida.
[11:14am] Word here in Toronto is that Wade Belak has been traded, which is unfortunate for me, as he's the most colourful player in the Leafs dressing room.
[10:55am] I just spoke to a source with Marian Hossa right now. Marian has not be informed, as of this time, that he's been moved. He is not skating with the team this morning and is not at the Bell Centre. Atlanta plays Montreal tonight. [10:43am] Sportsnet is reporting that Ottawa is shopping Chris Kelly. [10:39am] No surprise here: The Kings are fielding offers for Brad Stuart, Ladislav Nagy & Scott Thornton. All could be moved later today. [10:32am] TSN now confirms Janssen heading to St. Louis
[10:30am] New Jersey has acquired Bryce Salvador from St. Louis, per TSN. I've been told it's for Cam Janssen.
[10:26am] It looks like Ottawa, Boston and Detroit are out of the Hossa race. Price tag is too high, according to an Atlanta source. [10:15am] TSN's Bob McKenzie says Chicago has 8 players available: Nikolai Khabibulin, Martin Havlat, Robert Lang, Tuomo Ruutu, Marty Lapointe, Yanic Perreault, Andrei Zyuzin, Rene Bourque. . . . I've been told Lapointe's already a goner, as I stated earlier.
[10:01am] Predators are searching for depth. . . . Hawks could move Robert Lang. . . . Blue Jackets dangling Rostislav Klesla out there. [9:52am] In the out-of-no-where files... 2 reports in Toronto claim Leafs center Kyle Wellwood has asked to be traded.
[9:50am] No surprise here. Hossa won't skate with ATL this morning. [9:42am] Anaheim has been floating around in the Olli Jokinen talk. [9:40am] The Canadiens have been dangling Mikhail Grabovski as the centerpiece to a possible Marian Hossa trade, although Kyle Chipchura also remains a possibility. [9:13am] Devils were looking at Prospal, who was dealt to Philly. New Jersey is looking at bringing in a second-line winger. . . . Touching on Ottawa; the Senators are looking to make another significant trade and are in the Hossa race, although they may have fallen short. [9:12am] Columbus and Adam Foote are close to a 2-year extension. [9:04am] The Stars upped their offer for Richards last night, although as of a couple hours ago, no trade has been completed. [8:53am] Hossa's a goner. Waiting on word on final destination. [8:49am] I've been told the Stars are the frontrunner for Richards. [8:41am] Sharks, Devils and Hurricanes have expressed an interest in Edmonton goalie Dwayne Roloson. [8:35am] Toronto has 3 offers on the table for Bryan McCabe. The Leafs could be very active today, despite all the no-trade clauses. Matt Stajan, Nik Antropov, Hal Gill, Alex Ponikarovsky and Jason Blake could all be moved. Dallas likes their forwards, Detroit likes Gill. [8:23am] The Blackhawks are very active looking to make a few moves. As I mentioned yesterday, Martin Lapointe is gone. We'll know more on that later. New Jersey is interested in Robert Lang. The Hawks are very much in the Richards sweepstakes. The Penguins really want Tuomo Ruutu... there could be quite a few changes in Chicago. [8:15am] Back to Richards, Tampa has offers from Dallas, Columbus, Chicago and Vancouver. Edmonton was in the mix, but that's no long the case. [8:09am] The Brad Richards sweepstakes could be finised up later this morning. Lightning GM Jay Feaster continues to review the offers and is closing in on making his decision. On the Brian Campbell front, it looks like he's as good as gone. His agent, Larry Kelly, told the Buffalo News yesterday that Campbell's finished in Buffalo. [7:41am] Looks like the Islanders and Mike Comrie have signed that 1-year deal discussed last night. With Comrie inked, Miro Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko are goners. [7:30am]
Here we go! With less than 3-hours of sleep in me, I can't wait for the 3pm deadline. There's plenty of talk this morning and all signs point to this being a busy day.
