 These two
teams may not have met in the regular-season -- in fact they
haven't played each other since Oct. 7, 2006 -- but the
Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins could be on the
verge of playing in the most exciting Stanley Cup Final in
over 10-years.
With
the fast-paced Red Wings taking on the energy-filled
Penguins for hockey's ultimate prize, this battle will come
with a first: Will Sidney Crosby be the youngest captain in
Stanley Cup history, or will Nicklas Lidstrom be the first
Swedish-born captain to raise Lord Stanley's Cup?
As a team, the Red Wings'
average age of 32.3 is nearly five years older than the
Penguins' average of 27.9. The Penguins, however, are
bigger, standing at nearly 6-foot-2 and weighing an average
of 208 lbs., while Detroit's averages are just under 6-feet
and 195 lbs.
The Penguins have 13 former
first-round draft picks on their roster, including five
players selected in the top five: Ryan Whitney (5th overall
in 2002), Marc-Andre Fleury (1st overall in 2003), Evgeni
Malkin (2nd overall in 2004), Sidney Crosby (1st overall in
2005) and Jordan Staal (2nd overall in 2006). The Red Wings,
meanwhile, have three with the most recent being Niklas
Kronwall (29th overall in 2000).
