Canucks GM denies Ohlund rumor

TheFourthPeriod.com

Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund is in the final year of his contract and that has prompted speculation that he may be traded this season.

However, Canucks GM Mike Gillis told the Vancouver Province that a report suggesting Ohlund could be dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning for blueliner Matt Carle is completely false.

When asked if the rumor had any substance, Gillis said "no."

"It's remarkable to me that this information is being reported in this way. People can say what they want," he added.

The Province claims the report suggested that because negotiations between the Canucks and Ohlund's agent, J.P. Barry, have stalled, that the team was looking to move Ohlund to Tampa Bay.

Ohlund, 32, is earning $3.5 million this year and it has been widely reported that if an extension is not ironed out, the Canucks would try to move him.

The Ottawa Senators are believed to have shown interest.

From the Editor: At this point, the Canucks don't look to have any interest in trading Ohlund. The team is doing fairly well, and even if Gillis wanted to move him, why do it now? If something is to be worked out on the trade front, it will likely come closer to the trade deadline when values tend to skyrocket. -- David Pagnotta
