Wings assistant coach interested in Avs job? TheFourthPeriod.com
As the Avalanche continue their search for a new head coach, Detroit assistant coach Todd McLellan told the Denver Post he'd be interested in the position.
"I would be very interested," McLellan said. "I think right now there are a number of young coaches who have come up from the American League and have done a good job, and I consider myself one of those."
The Avs and Joel Quenneville parted ways Friday, leaving the coaching position open in Colorado.
McLellan, 40, is in charge of the Red Wings' highly power play and forwards. If the Avs are interested, they'd need to ask the Wings for permission to speak with him.
"I'm still a relatively young person in the business, so I have to be patient," McLellan said. "(Detroit GM) Ken Holland has always told me it's important to build a good resume before you go off into it on your own. I feel I've done that. I do feel I'm ready and have the confidence to do it."
Despite his interest, McLellan's focus is on the playoffs and helping the Wings capture another Stanley Cup.
"All our focus is on what's happening here with the Red Wings. We'll see what happens later on in the year," he said.
If the Avalanche consider McLellan, the Post suggests he'll be joined with potential candidates Patrick Roy, Kevin Dineen, Tony Granato, former Sharks coach Ron Wilson and Dallas Stars associate coach Rick Wilson.
