Hawks don't need to make moves

Despite various claims that the Blackhawks need to shed some immediate salary, GM Stan Bowman told the Chicago Daily Herald his team is fine the way it is.

With Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane locked up to new deals, numerous reports suggest the Hawks have been looking to shed some salary by trading away at least one of its current roster players in order to create tagging room under the cap.

Bowman indicated that the team has managed to fit its three stars under the cap requirements, and the Daily Herald reports he and assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff flew to Toronto prior to announcing the signings to meet with NHL heads to get the contracts approved.

"There is a league formula and we spent days going over this with the league making sure we understood how they computed it and making sure that everything would work, and it did," Bowman told the paper.

"This today is not impacting the current team at all. We can play with this team for the rest of the year, and we may choose to do that. We'll evaluate things as they come and if we find a way to do something that would help us we'll go down that road, but we may not."

The Hawks will still need to make a move or two prior to the start of next season, and if the right deal presents itself this year, Bowman could easily jump on it.

"Decisions have to be made and we'll make the right ones at the right time, but we don't need to get ahead of ourselves now," he said.

If the right deal comes along, the Hawks will bite. They would like some security space closer to the trade deadline, but by the sounds of things, they aren't desperate to make a move. That doesn't mean other teams won't stop calling. Toronto, Montreal, the Rangers and Edmonton have all inquired about some of Chicago's players. -- David Pagnotta
