KUZNETSOV’S DAYS NUMBERED IN WASHINGTON

The Washington Capitals and centre Evgeny Kuznetsov are finally heading down the path of ending their relationship.

The Capitals placed Kuznetsov on waivers Saturday after the team spoke with the player and his agent about his future. With the desire for a change of scenery once again voiced, the Capitals took the first step in placing him on waivers. If Kuznetsov clears waivers Sunday, he will be sent to the AHL.

“I think it’s about a fresh start for Kuzy, first of all,” said Capitals GM Brian MacLellan. “I think he’s been looking for a change in an environment and this might set the wheels in motion for that to be accomplished.”

Earlier in the day, Kuznetsov was cleared to resume practicing with the team and has entered the “follow-up care phase” of the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. It is clear, however, that Kuznetsov’s tenure with the Capitals is coming to a conclusion.

“This is a means to accomplish what they want,” MacLellan reiterated.

“I think we have a history here that’s gone on for a while and I think that it’s frustrating on both sides. It’s just an opportunity for our side too to start fresh and to try to get him an opportunity to continue his career (elsewhere).”

The Capitals tried to trade Kuznetsov for the last two seasons. A team can now put in a claim for him and acquire his rights without having to give up any assets. If not, the Capitals can try to trade him later on before Friday’s trade deadline or in the summer. The team can also explore the possibility of buying out his contract this off-season.
