KINGS, ROY TO DISCUSS CONTRACT AFTER SEASON

The Los Angeles Kings and defenceman Matt Roy are expected to engage in contract discussions over a new deal once the season concludes.

During Monday’s Trade Deadline prime episode, presented by CCM Hockey, TFP’s David Pagnotta and Dennis Bernstein discussed the news that Roy, who is in the final year of his contract, plans on exploring a new contract with the club during the off-season.

With $22.461 million in salary cap space going into next season, as per CapFriendly, the Kings must decide if they want to allocate a solid chunk of that to Roy on his next contract.

Goaltenders Cam Talbot, Pheonix Copley and David Rittich, and forwards Viktor Arvidsson and Trevor Lewis are also playing on expiring deals that lead them into unrestricted free agency this July.

Forwards Quinton Byfield, Blake Lizzote, Carl Grundstrom, Arthur Kaliev, Alex Turcotte and Jaret Anderson-Dolan, and defencemen Jordan Spence and Jacob Moverare are all set to become restricted free agents July 1 and are also in need of new deals.

According to Bernstein, much of what the Kings do this off-season will be based off of Byfield’s next contract. The two sides could look to agree on a bridge contract or go a full eight-year term, which would increase his cap hit.

Roy, who turned 29 on Friday, is in the final year of a three-year, $9.45 million contract and will command a nice raise on his next deal.
