The Dallas Stars have acquired defenceman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames in a three-way trade involving the New Jersey Devils.

In the first move, the Flames sent Tanev to the Devils for unsigned goalie prospect Cole Brady, and retained 50 percent of Tanev's contract.

In the second move, the Devils sent Tanev to the Stars for a 2026 fourth-round draft pick and retained 25% of Tanev's total contract.

Then, the Flames sent Brady to the Stars for defenceman Artem Grushnikov, a 2024 second-round draft pick and a 2026 third-round pick conditional on if the Stars do not advance to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to add a player of Chris’ caliber to our team,” Stars GM Nill said. “He is a proven defenseman with postseason experience that is comfortable in all situations on the ice. Chris is one of the best penalty killers in the NHL and will be a tremendous asset to our special teams play.”

Tanev, 34, recorded one goal and 13 assists for 14 points in 56 regular-season games with Calgary this season.

Tanev was No.3 on the TFP Trade Watch List.

“Artem is a player our organization has identified, for some time now, as being a strong addition to our prospects pool,” said Flames GM Craig Conroy. “As a 20-year-old he is having a solid season in the American Hockey League. He is best described as a young defensive defenseman, a good penalty killer who understands the importance of this role and plays to his identity. We are excited to acquire a player with Artem’s qualities and look forward to his contributions to the Flames success for a long time.”

Grushnikov, a native of Voskresensk, Russia, picked up five points and 32 penalty minutes in 44 games with the AHL’s Texas Stars this season.
